If I bought one of these vs a manual, I would have to chip it and will I blow the tranmission apart with 500/520 HP ?

We spent the weakened turning up a tip beyond any level that we have ever seen. The car has been running 600+HP and has lived at the the drag strips. To date and 25K miles the car is not showing any signs of age. We do feel that any preventative measures such as coolers etc should be something you look into. But in a word no. The tranny issued in the Benz and there are several examples of these cars putting out well over 700+RWTQ without issue and running different TQ converters. I stand corrected in any thing I have ever said about a tip being less desirable. This car modified can out shift any 6 speed in a 996 I have seen. Great for keeping the boost up.

Just to back up Stephen here, the very first thing I did when the car was broken in was to chip it. That was about 19k miles ago? I drove it daily. Someone we know (Ben Treynor) regularily drives his S600 which has the same ZF tranny in it and has chipped it to boot (has around 790 foot pounds of torque). Just chipping it won't harm it. Plus if you get the IBE switcher from imagineauto.com which I did a while back, the cool thing is you can switch between modes. You can cruise along in their enhanced 91/93 octane programs, or get a race 100 octane program for when you really want to gun it, or even just drop back down to the stock mode and it'll run just the same as it does now. Quite useful for going into the dealer if you have something on tap for them to sortout.

I'm not saying a Tip or a 6speed is slow without being chipped but it really does unleash the beast in the car.

 

The MB transmissions can really handle a lot of torque.

fastest 996 turbo I've ridden in is a tip with upgraded turbos/software/the works etc. belongs to a local guy and he drives it every day and he has nothing but good things to say about it.

 

Kevin was shaking his head when driving today... and he was easing into it hehe The grocery getter had to make a trip to the burritto place but unfortunately we got sidetracked by a freeway...

 

When the engine is making more power, does the program that govern the shiifting pattern/timing of the tiptronic have to be modified or does it not make any difference? I am thinking of upping the horsepower to a modest ~500HP.

 

I was told by the service manager at Paul Miller in NJ that the tip tranny is not designed to handle 540HP and above. At the time I've got a few cars to choose from and none associated with the dealership. They recommended going with a stick when higher HP is involved.

I am not sure how knowledgeable they are comparing to the people on the board though.

 

Some minor mods are needed, but I disagree. The dealer has never seen a tip with that much HP and Porsche will not release that type of info.

 

I disagree as well. I thought I was the only nut case tiptronic owners but to my suprise there are a few out there who have PM'd me over the last few months (mostly to egg me on hehe) wishing to remain anonymous that have some pretty bad **** tips beyond the 540 mark. I wouldn't use K16s to try and get that high... but K24s might manage it. I mean an X50 tip with a an aggressive chip and exhaust (there are a few) already hits 540... Those kind of numbers are not uncommon.
