Default GT3 Ram air collector

Hi
For fun, I have bought the FVD carbon ram air collector for my Mk1 Gt3 on the understanding that it may or may not give a couple of extra BHP a la RS.

I want to fit it with 3M automotive tape but I don't know which product is the most suitable, does anyone have experience to advise me, they have quite a choice

http://solutions.3m.co.uk/wps/portal...rylicFoamTape/

The data sheet area is a bit puzzling for me , the correct spec would be for a fairly thin tape that can withstand the forces associated with a spoiler.
Thanks in advance for any tips
Happy New Year
Mike

Check out Scott's write up. Useful stuff there.

Thanks, no mention of which exact spec of tape used, and if I followed the thread correctly the air collector was removed due to bad fit? after checking the fit before adhesion.
My FVD carbon item has no bolts supplied so must be designed for adhesive fit.
I'm going to check passive fit this weekend and see how it looks.
Anyone else done a Mk1?

It was a 3m body shop tape; didn't make any difference. Hopefully the CF is a better fit. Report back with results. GMG is no longer offering their piece. Getty Design is who I would try next.

Hi Scott
I'm confused, were you totaly happy with the fit before fitting it, on your pics in the thread you can clearly see some gapping at the sides. Did then the fit change as in a warping of the unit?
I'm not criticising anything you have done , just curious to know how it went from satifactory to being taken off.

I thought it fit initially, but one of the edges lifted after a day or so. There were no gaps initially; it was the lighting.

Subscribed, I'm ordering a set from cargraphic for my 6mk1 for the same reasons and just plan to use 3m tape. Don't want to drill

I drilled and bolted mine on. Worked great. The only issue was the anchor points on mine were in a hard to reach place in the hollow section.

Ok so why did it lift? If it fitted it fitted. did the adhesive fail? Did it warp or what?
I reckon the 3M automotive tape is def strong enough if used properly in conjunction with their special cleaner ( I don't think it is simply isopropyl alcohol)
I'm hoping the carbon fibre unit will be stable enough not to twist.
This is a fit to a 996Mk1 so it is perhaps diff to a Mk2 with the square wing.
Has anyone fitted one to a 1999 Mk1?? with the lovely swoopy wing

IPA should be a good enough (and safe) cleaner IMHO.

Tried on the FVD carbon item today , really , really good fit. Totaly stable doesn't rock at all, looking forward to fitting it once I've worked out the best 3M product to use ( probably end up asking my local bodyshop)

The 3M double sided tape is plenty strong. The adheasive looks like chewing gum or caulk. Do NOT use a product that looks like foam with double sided stick. That is weatherstripping for a screen door. The tape comes in rolls about 1/2" wide x 1 meter or the long roll is about 9 meters. It also can be purchased 1-1/2" wide but that is more expensive and the 1/2" works fine. The thickness of the tape is 1mm.

3M VHB. Used it on my Manthey piece several years ago, and holding still.

Without wishing to be pedantic which of the tapes in the 3M link in my original post are the most suitable please.

Didn't see it on the list, so went to the 3M site. You want 3M VHB Heavy Duty Mounting Tape 5952
http://www.Shop3M.com/3m-vhb-heavy-d...952-8TRTQKPDT3

As I said, used this on my piece, and has held nicely on many 100+ mph runs (many at 140+ mph) and several track days.

(and from the 3M UK site:
