Lightbulb FVD Rear Deck Ram Air Scoop Installed; Pics + Write Up

When I received my painted scoop from Gold Crest, I noticed the scoop did not have any of the posts I had read about earlier from others who have done the install. These posts were fixed in the scoop, which required one to drill their rear deck for the posts to pass through, then nuts were attached to the underside.

I called and spoke to Steve at GC, and he informed me that this was not a concern, and to run a bead of silicone just inside the tape for added adhesion, but that this was the mounting process for the factory pieces. The double sided stuff they used seemed pretty darn stout and they know I drive the car on track so I am not worried.

Here’s the process I used:
  1. Get some pictures of other installs up on your laptop before you begin to check the alignment of others; there is no template.
  2. Remove RS wing; this makes it easier to position the scoop.
  3. I did several test fits, gauging by eye alone, checking for alignment and or gaps. Also checking what pictures were available on line.
  4. After doing this ~50 times, I finally decided it was time
  5. Wipe down mounting surface of car with isopropyl alcohol
  6. Remove tape shield from double sided tape
  7. Apply bead of silicone sealant (DAP)
  8. Hover above application area, eye ball it once more, and then apply the scoop to the deck surface
  9. Press down hard on the back end of the scoop to ensure the tape mates to the surface of the deck

That’s pretty much it. I think I did pretty well.

The tape of course is very very sticky already, but I will give the silicone ~24hrs to set before driving. I don't expect a seat of the pants feeling on the street, but perhaps on the track, with my 997 GT3 TB + plenum, we'll see.

Thanks for the pics & info, Scott. I was curious how the fit is with this FVD piece.

Thanks!

Looks really good, how was the vendor overall? I'm a newbie to them.

The fit is ~99%; its been mentioned before that it shouldn't be a $300 part and I agree. However, I couldn't see spending $800 for the GMG piece, and then painting it and IMGT3 has been a no show on their piece.

Thanks again for your help! Even though it was red, I used one of your pictures as a guide.

The piece was purchased from FVD by Gold Crest, so I didn't have any interaction with FVD. Having said that, Rhonda at FVD (email) is always quick with answers when I have questions, and other purchases have gone without issue.

Scott, I LOVE it!

So, who is Gold Crest? I googled it and there are about a million Gold Crests. Are they a local-to-you shop that ordered the scoop and painted it?

They are the race / prep / support shop in Georgia that did my coolant repair work (link). There were some shipping delays and miscommunications that prevented the scoop from being installed before I picked the GT3 up, so they just shipped it with some other parts when it was ready.

Tape and silicone are totally sufficient
I had tape only up to 165+ mph several times and no issue (manthey scoop)

Looks great!

My guess is that the way it is designed there is also down pressure on the top side of the scoop creating a nice seal DOWN onto the car. The last thing you want is a parachute effect catching 150+mph wind with no break in the stream.

Great mod!

JFYI, the FVD scoop used to come with bolts as they were part of the TüV approval.

Does it end up being relatively useful? It looks pretty neat.

FWIW, the previous owner of my car also installed one of these and said he saw a slight increase in MPH at the end of the back straight at Road Atlanta as a result. (1-2 mph consistantly)

Before and after were not done on the same day so take the results as you will, but his impression was that there was some power gain from the piece.

He was very particular about verifying everything he did to the car via data. Had it flashed at the track one day and saw zero gain in MPH in back to back sessions even allowing the tuner to tweak the tune and in the end reverted back to stock tune since there was no improvement at the track.

Although it is not possible to dyno the difference, it works there is no debate as we can't cheat physics.

Just keep in mind that you need the oem filter box or a similar sealed box.
