UPDATE:

Stan at G Box spent alot of time with me today. My ring n pinion are totally shot! worn to nubs, moving around alot. Tranny was a time bomb...1st, 2nd and 4th are shot! My LSD is totally shot/non-op.....he is going to slightly uprate the preload springs for better LSD peformance but still street friendly (I am only doing track days and DE's with the car, also drive it on street).

I also decided to go with an new 3rd ratio so I will have sweet ratios all the way thru 5th, and will still have the stock 6th.

Oh well. I got a great deal on the car ($50K) and will now have a 20K mile GT3 that is perfectly set up for a while.

If you're not completely committed yet, you can always change your 3, 4, 5 gears and move your existing 5th gear into the 6th position.

Ring and pinion failure is strange since I'm assuming you have the original differential in. This is more common when people install an aftermarket differential and don't set the backlash/pinion depth.

Thx. That would probaby be sweet. I do need to try to save a little money here....I also do like the idea of nice improved ratio gaps 1- 5, and 6th stays as overdrive.

Our local track is pretty small and tight (only use 2-5). Also, I drive this car to our vail condo sometimes for fun, 90 miles mtn highways each way, sunday cruises, etc.. I need to keep the wife from barking at me that its a bit loud @ 85 mph while she's trying to read .

Are they using cup LSD internal plates or stock plates? Cup will last longer. If stock plates- it'll fry sooner then later. Mike

Based on the information from Guard in another thread about LSD rebuilding, you will be very lucky to get new OEM plates that is a perfect fit in you diff. Apperantly the ramps in these diffs have slightly different lengths, and for that reason Guard always has them measured and provides plates that are the correct size compared to the ramps. All Porsche plates are the same size and has the potential to not fit perfectly - or more correctly, the ramp lenght can create different gaps inside the housing with plates that are always the same size.

offtopic and sry to hijack,

how much does it cost to rebuild one syncro on a gt3 car?

do you guys recommend to rebuild all the other 5 even if they are in good shape? if so whats the cost involved?

is it really needed to install a lsd when you get the trans out? or you can leave it like that and just do your rebuild...

If you are keeping the stock ring 'n pinion ratio, I bet you can get a used one for a good price from someone who's "upgrading" (or changing) to a more aggressive ratio (either Cup (4:1) or Guard's (4.125:1))?

The only thing the plate thicknesses change is the preload from the Belleville washers. It will always "fit."

Something is not right here. $10K for tranny rebuild = $500 per hour labor rate. Parts along should be no more than couple grand. My Cup tranny was completely rebuild for much less than $10K
