Default Looking to get a lap timer....

that is reasonably priced. I did a search and it seems like the Hot Lap units are in fairly wide use. I don't need a full data system.

Is this the one I want?

Input appreciated.

fwiw i went through 2 ultra lap timers and finally bought traqmate for 1000$ (now i would get http://www.race-keeper.com/ ) after spending almost 500 for the 2 ultralaps and they broke down.also pain to get the beacon and easy to forget it..).others have had good luck with them but if you plan on tracking for awhile i think it is worth the investment now to get a data gps lap timer data system ...

a friend swears by this inexpensive iphone app plugged into his own tom tom to make it more accurate...app and tom tom for less than 200$ http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/harry...307688598?mt=8

I had the AiM MyChron in my old car and loved it. Easy to use, can be hardwired in to the car (doesn't have to be) and has a big display.

http://www.aimsports.com/products/tg/index.html

Many of the guys in my region had been using the HotLap timer and were frustrated that the beacons are/were not specific to the receiver. So the guy with the beacon set on the front straight was having his lap time interrupted by the guy with the beacon on the back straight...Make sense?

At the time, I seemed to be the only one using the AiM, so it worked very well. Another neat option is that you can get a split timer beacon which allows one to divide the lap into two sectors. Helpful for learning where you may be losing time.

I personally hate beacons, I always forget them. Get a GPS timer.

I use the Performance Box as well. Has start finish coordinates available for most tracks which helps.

I would definitely go with something GPS based. Beacons are the worst. If you don't want to spend the cash to have a Traqmate system (cheapest entry level gps based data acquisition that I am aware of) then go with "Harry's iPhone Lap Timer." I have several friends at the track that use this and love it. Personally I think it's pretty sweet. IIRC his newest one works with the camera in the new iPhone and will overlay data! The most expensive part of the setup is buying the TomTom cradle for GPS.

If you get a beacon based system, you will probably outgrow it quickly. I agree with everyone above, as we have all had them, and found the shortcomings quickly. I also recommend Traqmate as a place to start, but there are other systems that can offer more for more money.

Traqmate. I looked at Race Keeper but no in-car display you have to use an I Phone to get the lap times inside the car...GPS is the way to go.

I use Performance Box as well. Good price, GPS based, portable, decent basic data acquisition...
Otherwise I think Traqmate is the way to go.

I use PBox as well, but I find it more than basic and much easier to use (and move from car to car) than Traqmate. Plus, the new software is pretty robust and the MIM lets you get RPM, TPS, brake etc. I upgraded my PBox for virtually nothing to get the newer chip that can take the MIM inputs. It's pretty good so far (other than my crappy install).

I've used MaxQData up to now (gps based). Great entry-level portable gps system that is easily moved from car to car in literally seconds.

Moving to RaceKeeper because I want data synched to video and specifically RK because it doesn't have the in-car display. For my personality, I figured I shouldn't have an in-dash display of my current lap time because then I might try and overdrive in order to hit a time. Too risky for me. So I opted for the download-after-the-run-session style.
