If you get a beacon based system, you will probably outgrow it quickly. I agree with everyone above, as we have all had them, and found the shortcomings quickly. I also recommend Traqmate as a place to start, but there are other systems that can offer more for more money.
i am looking for something REAL easy to use and GPS based. haven't found it yet.

^u still owe me one transponder u left at sp. Neway I left laptiming to amp transponders- one less thing to look at the cockpit and I'm faster and safer that way. Mike

I use PBox as well, but I find it more than basic and much easier to use (and move from car to car) than Traqmate. Plus, the new software is pretty robust and the MIM lets you get RPM, TPS, brake etc. I upgraded my PBox for virtually nothing to get the newer chip that can take the MIM inputs. It's pretty good so far (other than my crappy install).

And the new firmware update adds predictive lap timing

You can set the start/finish before or after your event. Or you can set it during your lap by simply hitting a button.

Or.......with something like Traqmate (and I'm sure others) you get the S/F from somebody that already has it and enter it into the system before you even leave to the track!
Come on John! If we didn't start the car for you it would never get to the line

The AIM SmartyCam setup can be a little finicky, but once you get it set, its great. They have a couple hundred tracks in their dB....
Again, for the OP, a GPS-based laptimer (video included)

I'm still using a longacre hot lap timer...it was a hand-me-down. Don't have a beacon so no laptimes if someone else doesn't set it up. A couple times I put numbers on quarter window over where receiver is. Oops, no laptimes.
I'll be looking into a GPS based unit this year.
