I removed all the crap in the front boot, the ipod in the rear center console and anything else that could move. Just at a lost at this point.

I'm moving onto driveline now....CV joint (or whatever is in there)? Can't remember if you had those looked at. I'm feeling too lazy to read the thread.

Did you check (tighten) the drop links at the car end as opposed to the sway bar end?

Is the sound a pinging sound like when a spring jumps back onto a spring perch?

Yup, checked every nut and bolt I could think of. The spring on the spring perch (which I know for a fact it isn't) sounds more like, as you said, a pinging sound, This is more like something heavy running into something else heavy and immoveable.

Any possibility it's engine mounts? They are supposed to change those with the X73

Dell, you have just about checked everything looking for this elusive sound. Have you had anyone local stop by to take a listen? Sometimes a second set of ears can make all the difference. When I get into chasing the phantom... I will give my father a call and have him throw his 2 cents in...

Totally agree. I'm at the end of my rope. Time to raise the white flag and grab another set of ears.

Absolutely positively almost 100% positive that what I am dealing with is pad knock back. Based on what it sounds like, feels like, etc, I just can't imagine it is anything else.

Just as a reference point, I did the same upgrade to the 6 piston calipers and rotors and have never had "the clunk". I have used various Pagid pad sets with no backing plates for 3 years now.

Could it possible be the alignment of the sway bar and the control arm that touch as the nose dives under heavy braking?

It is your helmet banging on the roll bar.

Could it be that old age is affecting hearing?

just playin! I'll look again but there is not a single bolt that isn't torqued down properly or a single suspension piece out of place or rubbing.

it only happnes sometimes. My guess is only the times where the undulations in the surface cause the pads to move and then when I apply the brakes the is when I get the sound. I'll start experimenting with a slight LFB before actually braking to seat the pads.

Could it be the 6 pot upgrade be defective? Why don't u put back the crappy 4 pot back on and see if clunk goes away? Mike
