Hurry up and test drive it. It isn't right that you're making us wait so long to find out the problem.

Dell I had the top nut holding a front JRZ come loose this past weekend during a race. It progressively made louder and louder thunks under braking and acceleration but I finished the race. Was sure it was going to be a drop link, but surprised that the shock nut came loose and not very loose at that. Tightened it back up and all was well....

Thanks JR! I didn't check the top nut nor any of the strut bolts from the top side. I'll put that on my list

OK sorry to come in so late on this one but I've had the same thing happen to me on a GT3 and 964 using performance friction or pagid (race) pads. I would intermittently hear a clink when I was close to coming to a stop. Many times the first hard stop after moving in reverse. When I would switch to stock pads in the 964, this sound would go away. The only thing I could ever attribute it to was that there was possibly a little bit of fore/aft play in the pad and a good stop would force the pad forward on retainer pin creating the clink sound. That is pure speculation however.

If we are talking about the same sound I can tell you that it is definitely brake pad related. I have had the brakes apart on a bi-weekly basis on several of these cars as I'm sure you guys have and I'm pretty confident that whatever is making the sound isn't a broken or malfunctioning part. Especially given the number of pads we all go through here.

Good luck!

The pads in the there right now are stock pads (the yellow OEM ones).

Hmmm I've never ran stock pads on a 996 variant but since they are basically identical to a pagid race pad, I'm sure they would produce the same sound. Can't say for sure though.

I prefer to listen to the giant sucking sound of my bank account draining as I dump cash into these cars.

Damn, I was hoping for an easy answer to my issue....
A couple weeks ago I heard a clunk/something shifting while turning at a stop (backing outta the drive).
Today on the way home the wife called me and told me "Somethings up with the Porsche, there's a clack( women) in the steering wheel."

So this week end I'll be looking into what's going on in the front....yay.

Oh and I'll be posting a new thread tomorrow if I can't figure it out since it's not a braking issue "clunk"...women....

So I just got back from a spirited drive and still can't figure this damn thing out. It sounds like it might be on both sides which leads me to believe it is the pads.

Interesting to note is it is really only happening on HARD (threshold braking or near that) braking and not on light braking.

I am stumped. The sound is enough to worry me though. Just wish I could figure it out. What I might do is put a cushion (not sure what yet) between the pad and the cotter pin to absorb the clank/clunk if that is in fact the source. That would certainly help identify it.

I think it's on the other side too. I need some help with this one. I might go pick up Scott after work and have him sit right seat to help out with this.

Rather than putting a cushion on the pads, whatever that would be, and risk other unintended consequences (fire, damage, etc.) why not buy the anti-squeal pads and put them in? That would solve the problem for sure if it's the pads moving around.
