996 vs 997.1 or .2 GT3 track car
Contemplating weather I go with a 6 or 7.
Bang for the buck it really is a no brainer but what is the better track car.
I talked to an owner of both a 996 GT3 and a 997.1 RS and he thinks the RS is crap for a track car and prefers the 996. Basically told me to get a 996.
After reading about ABS icemode and rear pads wearing out 2 to 1 compared to fronts on the 7 I am hesitant. I think he probably didn't upgrade the crappy lsd that it comes with the 7 and its probably all ready burnt out. I don't know since the 996 lsd is also pretty weak.
He also said he doesn't pull on the 996 at all down the straight. Says the 996 is much lighter but brochure says the RS is lighter.
I don't care about the looks. Though I think the RS looks fantastic.
I got to drive a 997.1 RS and coming from a 996 C4S it was amazingly strong and felt planted everywhere, brakes were amazing. I was easily taking corners 10-15 kph faster in it and didn't even get comfortable with it.

As a track car, a 996 with typical mods will be as fast and far less expensive. Plus, more fun to drive. See Excellence mag for recent comparisons. True, I am biased as a 996 GT3 owner but most of the feedback I have read here on Rennlist is that a 997.1 GT3 is easier to drive fast but not as rewarding. So if "better" means a more difficult learning curve,go 996. If you want easy to drive fast asap, but perhaps an earlier plateau, go 997. I think if you want to drive the car as a summer saily driver I suppose the 997 would be easier to take, but with track mods both are a compromise.

+1 for the 6GT3. I may also be biased but it is pure and when properly set up, it's a blast. You're fast in the 4S so go for the 6 and let Gianni @ Fiorano set it up, and you won't be disappointed.

you posted this on 6gt3 board. so you will get more ppl loving 6.
i have every version of GT3/RS, all tracked.
i am sorry but your friend is way off.
given equal driver and mod, 7 is ALWAYS faster, but how much... not much. but faster nevertheless.
fun to drive: that depends on what you define fun to drive is. if you really want fun. GT3 sucks compared to lotus eixge S260.
ice mode can be had in all the GT3's not just 7.
7 wears rear pads 2x faster than front
6 wears front 2x faster than rear
both cars have bad LSD.
if you insist on no TC, PASM then you only have 6 to choose from
if you drive at all on the street, the 7 is better.
it's easier to mod a 6 b/c you dont have to kill off various electronic gizmos.
but to say the 7 or the RS is crap track car is way off mark. i think your friend's words must have been taken out of context.
above are my opinion with no concerns for $.
if you add $ to the equation, 6 wins period.
i have both still. and i track the 6, mod the 6, spin the 6

That being said, it is truly amazing when it clicks.

[edit: FWIW, on our local track (1.7 miles), the 7.1 GT3 is 1 second faster than 6GT3 with the same pro driver in each car (back to back, Hoosier R6s, cars are bascially stock)]

.2 netime. 3.8 motor more power/better trq band. Bang for the buck u can't beat 6. At least in norcal best laptimes have been on a 6. Mooty can verify that as well as me. But technically 7.1 is faster with same driver. 7.2 even more. Pick your poison : ). Mike

I think going from a C4S to a 7GT3 (.1 or .2) would be easier than going to a 6GT3. I have seen many AWD drivers [C4 or Turbo] unable to adjust to the 6GT3 as quickly as they expect. They simply putt-putt around the track for many laps until someone shows them how to drive the 3. And then it takes a lot of seat time to "get it." Even folks coming from other 996s with PSM/PASM/whatever have issues.

+1 on Mooty's comments.
Take a good look at your budget and add in the cost of safety equipment and track mods. Once you add in seats, harnesses, roll bars, Hans, extra wheels, suspension tweaks, rotors, pads, etc. the price gets quite high. These are fast fast cars and if you plan to track on a regular basis get safe...sh*t happens out there.
Of course once you do all this you end up with a car that's not that great on the street...seats hard to get in and out of, harnesses to deal with, stiff bumpy suspension and lots of creaks and rattles....like the shoulder harnesses whacking the backs of the seat every time you brake So the car evolves into more of a dedicated track car.....the 7's are a nicer street car and have the nannies and the chassis is slightly faster....the 3.8 in the .2 sweetens the deal. But it's pretty easy to get sucked into spending big bucks for a couple of seconds. A well prepared 3.8 .2 IMO will cost twice that of a 6GT3 that's insignificantly slower unless seconds count for something. I think Mooty has the right idea making a track car from a 6....

6GT3 is a Cheap Disposable Track Car compared to the 7GT3. I really miss my 6GT3. I didn't feel the 7.1 GT3 was enough of an upgrade over the 6GT3 BUT the 7.2/RS GT3 is a significant upgrade over the Previous GT3's.
I now have the philosophy that if you can't afford to leave it at the track don't buy it. I know you can get Insurance but it is expensive if you track a lot, unavailable with a lot of groups and also if you TT the car.

as usual 100% correct. If you are going for 90% track 996 would be a great choice. Remember you either have to get track insurance or have the money to part out the leftovers following impact.
