I think the instructor takes the student's car out for a few laps (at least for the green run group).. at least that's how it is done here..

 

Really? If you're running with PCA- why they need to drive your car(unless they are checking with safety issue of car)? Longtime ago when HOD wasn't around they had a scca runned HPDE at thill and they use to do that. Some instructor crashed a car- after that instructors are not allowed to drive participants cars. NASA use to do that and same thing happen as well. Mike

 

All the events I signed up are PCA events. I was told that for the green run group (not sure if it is just the first time out or every time if you are still in the green group.. will find out.. !) the instructor will take the car out for a few laps just to check things out to make sure everything is okay, etc.

This is what I was told.. but like I said, not exactly sure if it is only for the first time rookie or it is every time if you are still in green.

I don't think those check out laps are driven at the limit.. (or they shouldn't be..)

That fire extinguisher is pretty, but won't do you any good as it sits. Please let us know if you have luck getting it re-filled w/Halon.

Have fun and listen to your instructors. It's a slippery slope, but a great ride!

 

I got it re-filled here locally already.. Halon 1121 is about $20 / lbs.. total cost include new o-ring and tax is around $60 to fill the 2.5 lbs bottle!

 

A couple local groups have the instructor drive the student's car but they only go 5/10 and are primarily showing the student the line while explaining where you should be looking/turning/braking etc. Yes, riding with an instructor in the instructor's car at a decent clip is very educational.

The thought is that the instructor (going at regular highway or slower speed) can show the line, gear selection and corner worker stations. It works well in that the student does not have anything else to do but watch and listen. This is the green first time attendees.

You are right on.
Any instructor that crashes, puts a wheel off, or drives more then 5/10s on the evaluation/sighting laps in a students car should not have the title of instructor and is disrespectful of others property.

 

Officially got done w/ my first ever DE.. (check out the ghetto duct tape #! )

It was a lot of fun and a hugely humbling experience. Wow, I was terrible. Going into it, I had some basic idea about what needs to be done.. but when it is time to do it, at speed, w/ other cars in front of me.. that's a whole different story.. I couldn't do anything right...

1. can't downshift smoothly, chirp the rear wheels a couple of times or finish downshifting way after braking
2. can't brake smoothly, locked up the front a few times
3. because of the 1 and 2, missed turning points
4. because of 3, turning too late and missing the apex
5. brake too early when I see there's cars in front of me

the list goes on and on..

But thankfully the instructor I had was very patient.. didn't give me a hard time on can't do anything right.. ha! For a couple of sessions, we took away the shifting issue by staying in 3rd gear in the straight (GT3 gets up to 115mph or so in 3rd anyway) to concentrate on the line so that was a pretty good idea. I also had my instructor took my car out for a couple of laps in the 2nd and 4th session of the day to see how it is done properly.

Anyway, like I said, a very humbling experience. Hopefully better next time.. !
