Piston ring for 996 GT3 engine availability?
Long story short.. a small leak was detected at the bottom of one of the cylinder banks. Probably no big deal but the dealer took it apart, ordered all the parts to put in a new gasket, as the car is still under CPO...
When they pull the cylinder bank out, or when they are putting it back in (?), they cracked one of the piston rings.
Was told that Porsche NA does not have it so it has to be ordered from Germany.. and they can't tell me when it will get in..
1. Really? Porsche NA does not have even one? Or the dealer is messing with me?
2. Anywhere else to get the part?
3. Was it a dumb move to let the dealer open up the engine? Can they usually do a decent job putting it back together and not affecting the long term reliability?

I don't think there's any new additional warranty.. the car is currently under CPO, that's why the dealer was fixing the small leak / wet spot under warranty.. but during re-assembly, one of the piston rings was cracked (they didn't tell me that they did it.. they just said one of the rings required replacement..)
I just spoke to the dealer again this afternoon and was told that it is being air freight from Germany.. they checked all the dealers in US and there's none.
I don't mind the extra wait. I just hope that the engine will be as new once it is put back together..
The service manager did comment on the condition of the pistons / cylinders and said that they look new..

Agree that it is not unusual for the parts not to be in US or Canada. It takes the Porsche AG system a couple days sometimes to confirm the part availability and location.

Not unusual piston rings not in stock. Many thousands of cars and even...
Most engines yanked from car under warranty go back to factory and replacement engine comes of course fully assembled ready to rock and roll.
Most dealers don't stock even more common items so finding no dealer not even PCNA stocks rings no biggie imho.
Sincerely,
Macster.
