GT3 HORSEPOWER VS 996 HORSEPOWER
Just wondered what the differences are between the two engines in say a 2004 or 2005 car. Where does the xtra horsepower come from? Cam? Intake? Compression ratio? How similar are the engines structurally?

Holy smokes. The differences are huge. Even the basics are different. I could write for ten minutes and still have differences to tell you about. The GT3 uses the 3.6 liter engine from the 911 GT1 whereas the standard 996 engine is a pedestrian unit.
I think a web search is in order.

They are both 3.6 ltr horizontally opposed water cooled engines assembled in Germany. Other than that, everything is different. The highlight as Michael B wrote is that the GT3 is based on a race engine case and has a dry sump and the 996 engine was designed from scratch as a street engine, wet sump and all.

Stolen from wikipedia:
"Most important of all was the re-tuned engine. Although it shared the same basic displacement as the 3.6 litre flat-six cylinder that powered the standard 911, it was based on the dry sump GT1 racing motor. Porsche made significant modifications to the heads, intake, exhaust and computer control systems. In addition, Porsche used a specialized manufacturing process on the GT3's engine; standard 911s use a two-piece engine block split down the center line of the crankcase. On the GT3 the split-crankcase parts are cast separately and bolted to the two blocks of three cylinders per bank, a design that was originally developed specifically for racing applications that makes the engine stiffer and capable of producing more power."

I'm often asked this question from folks who are new to the Pcar world. Its a false assumption that the GT3 motor is just a tuned up 996 motor. Its NOT.
Just to make a long story short. A 3.6 996 crate motor is about $10K to $12K. A GT3 crate motor is over $40K.
That should do it.

I did not know that. That's gotta be a very bad feeling, if you miss a shift...
