^tranny is different from 997s. I had it on my old 996 loved it. The 6gt3 is already shorter stock to stock. Mooty has a bm on his 6 when he bought it. He hates it and so do I. If u plan to track u don't want to miss 3rd gear. Mike

It's not clear that you guys are discussing the same SSK... I agree on not being a fan of the B&M style kit that requires removing the shift lever from it's housing and replacing it. The 997 GT3 OEM ssk however is a drop in replacement housing and lever assembly. It will make shifts crisp and precise and IMO not hinder the critical 2 -> 3 shift (or others for that matter).

If you were considering a std 997 shifter, that would likely have been a waste of money. But the Porsche 997 GT3 SS assembly is another matter. I've heard of some buying this kit from their dealer and simply getting a B&M because of the dealers lack of knowledge about the OEM drop in assembly.

Hope that helps clear things a bit.

Guys this has been a very useful thread (thanks!) but as above, dumb question time. My read of all the above is, to summarise:

On a 996 GT3 that is used a lot on track dont get the 996/997 SSK (part number 997 424 983 00) as you may miss 3rd gear on track. Instead just get the standard 997 shifter (part # 997 424 010 00) but make sure you get the cup gear cables.

Is that right? Just wanted to confirm as I want to get this mod but I use my 996GT3 on track.

Many thanks

With reference to the ssk- 997gt3 shifter plus housing(box) is not an ssk. It's stock for 997gt3. It's shorter then the 6 shifter plus housing by 10%. ssk is just like
bm which is just the internals being replaced. There's no such thing as an ssk 997gt3 with housing. Mike

Thanks for the clarification Mike. IIRC, my dealer had 2 997 part numbers for the shift "module" or housing... one was stock and the other short. Unfortunately, I don't recall either part number (and am too lazy to pull the console off to look at mine ). One thing is certain though, the module I installed was a visual carbon copy of the 996 housing i removed and more interestingly its shift distance reduction is easily more than 10%.... something over 20% from my observation when i installed.

Something isn't lining up here, but then, it's so common to get off or incorrect info from the dealer (your dealer may vary) that it's not surprising that there would be confusion around this.

I track my 6GT3, and have replaced the stock 996 GT3 shifter mechanism with the 997 GT3 shifter. I did not change the cables. I am sure, from what have read, that they provide an improvement. However, even without the cable$, the shift is improved over the 996 one, and is fine for me.

Dave and everyone else I'll look at the part number for the 997 shifter plus housing since I do not have a center console. Regards. Mike

997 424 983 00 is the SSK recommended by viper bob..it is the SSK for the 997s...i assume with the different cars and cables, the results of this switch will differ...on the 997s great (personal experience) on the996 ? may need cable upgrade...but PIA as i have read...

i have only had my car for a week and just got it back from the shop ..race seats and harness in...i like the stock shifter so ill tough it out until i miss a couple of 2-3 shifts,,then starting shopping again...thanks

Here's the part no to my shifter box on my 6. It's 997-424-010-00 like brendanj mentioned. Mike

looks like the same shifter viper bob recommended...standard 997 ssk...i assume fits all 997's and 6's ..bob just put it in a 996 turbo and they loved it..but i think the ssk feels differently in different cars...haven't heard anything great here on RL with this ssk and the 996 gt3...

sounds like it is the SSK - it's twice the list price of the std part !
might just go with convention and fit the std 997 GT3 part

my porsche dealer tells me that the stock part now for the shifter for 996 gt3 and 997 gt3 are the same..they told me (probably wrongly) that i would be putting the same part in....i assume that means they dont make the old 996gt3 shifter part anymore and just the upgraded newer one?
