You may have just been driving better than Andy
No Chance!

I have limited skills and knowledge so bear with me!

For any given gear yes it accellerates faster so I have found so far that the real benefit is at circuits with lots of twisties or low speed turns.

I'm interested in installing one of these shifters in my 2001 996 C2. I just went out and measured the throw of my stock shifter. I measured from the front of the shifter handle in third gear to the front of the shifter handle in fourth gear. I came up with 4 ¾”. Could someone measure the throw of their 997 GT3 shifter as a comparison? It may be helpful to others if someone could measure their 996 GT3 and a B&M equipped car.

I have the factory wood handle and this is how I took my measurements. I put a straight edge flat on the front of the shifter handle in third gear and hooked a tape measure to it. I ran the tape measure back and rested my hand on the emergency brake handle and locked the tape measure in place. Keeping the tape measure in place I moved the shifter to fourth gear. I then placed the straight edge on the front of the shifter again and measured how far back on the tape I was.

These measurements are the best I can do with what I have here.

1st - 2nd 4.5"
3rd - 4th 4.75"
5th - 6th 5.0"

I have the 997 shifter in mine with cup cables.

I drove a friends with it before I got mine. I didnt think much of it at the time but then I drove mine. Yuk!

The gear change is much sweeter now.

Do you have any pictures or the part number(s) for the cup cables?

I think there is no need to change the cables because the 6GT3 and 7GT3 share the same cables - same part number. They also share the same fasteners that attach the cables to the shifter.

However, the 6GT3 bracket that holds the cables to the transaxle is a different part number to the 7GT3. Any idea why?

The cup car cables are steel rather than nylon. That makes a huge difference to feel!

well already wanting to spend more $ at shop ..while the car is getting aligned it appears that the shifter is a weak link...
after extensive searches on RL can't seem to find the answer on upgraded shifter for 996 gt3. i called dealer and they told me that the part for 997 gt3 and 996 gt3 shifter is the same now? maybe it is upgraded from the original 996gt3 shifter?
would i be better off getting the Porsche SSK (short shifter?) a/t the searches, the advantage of the 997 gt3 shifter is the preciseness with the same distance throws...the SSK shifter i assume will be both more precise and shorter? can anyone chime in that has done only a shifter mod without cables to give a more fair comparison to stock 996 gt3 shifter..thanks

I have 997 shifter mod on my 6 wo cup cables. 10% shorter throw. Less sloppy then stock 6. Will do the cup cables at some point. Mike

so i assume they only make the newer better one and numbered the part for both cars now...

a couple hundred bucks more the SSK shifter might be worth it...? anyone out there with the porsche ssk in their 996 gt3 thanks..

got a reply for Viper Bob....great guy...

There is a 996 and a 997 part number for a short shifter. Both will fit in your 996 GT3. The 997 one is nicer. I just put one in a 996TT customers car. He loves it. I would go with the 997 one. Part # is 997 424 983 00

so getting the SSK!..
ccw's on the way with RA1's
race seats in
airbag delete bar in ...

haven't told the wife yet about all this

Please keep us posted w/ the 997 SSK. From reading the forum, it seems that most people do not run SSK in the GT3. But would like to hear how you like your setup when you get it!

Well I had it my 997s. I hope I like the ssk in the gt3. Maybe I'll orderthe stock 997 gt3 shifter instead. We'll see. I think my dealer will think I'm schizophrenic

If ssk is the Porsche version of bm shifter - way too short(30%) and notchy. U will have a difficult time finding 3rd gear. Mike
