Keep in mind that this was a $tealer, and going back in to turn the syncros around was on their dime. Of course they had no idea who Brian is and his depth of experience and knowledge.

Brad,

Do you know if the replacement work was covered under warranty?

Do you have a general idea of the cost/time to correct a situation as described in the initial thread? Obviously, this may vary greatly, but just wondering if we are talking $1,000, $10,000 or somewhere in between?

I had the same problem with 1st gear as well as shifting into 3rd under high G lateral loads (usually turning left). Turns out they replaced the the entire transmission under warranty. First gear problem went away but 3rd gear issue still remains. I understand that several other GT3 owners have the same 3rd gear complaint.

I've had the same difficulty shifting into 3rd under lateral load first with my 996 C2 and now my GT3. It's some type of inherent structural flaw with the 996 platform.

if you are having this probb at TH T11-13, it's not b/c of lateral load. the car doesn't generate enough load to do that.

one, try different grade oil.
two, pause a nano second in neutrail before shift to 3rd then no prob.

if you are having this issue else where, then..... hum i dont know. maybe you need a new car holger ;-)

well as i stated the intial post sounds alot like normal opeartion but i cant confirm that without drivign the car myself,
it was an issue and wsa deemed abuse, youd be looking at 14-16 hours to r&i the trans and another 10-12 to tear it down to 1st gear and replace ive never done one for first gear usually we replace 2nd or 3rd or 5th

14-16 hours to remove and install??? I change to the LWF setups in these cars which requires removing the tranny, and that entire operation (with changing the rear main seal) is only about a 4 hour job...

Yep, that is why when a tech leaves Porsche many times they can not think on their own. It is SOOOO easy to remove the transaxle for this job. These are not the cars of old that literally you could drop the whole engine / tranny assembly in 45 minutes. Now you have too many other systems to deal with in order to do this job. My feeling has always been to concentrate your efforts on the problem at hand and to impact as few other systems as possible. The more you touch, the more chances for error, damage, wear, etc. Why remove an engine with all the power steering, a/c, cooling lines, oil lines, electrical, and the list goes on? But that book says X, so that is how it is done. Guess it is a good way for the dealer to always have plenty of work to do.

Porsche method for re-painting interior of house

Step 1 - Remove roof to gain better access to walls
Step 2 - Remove all carpeting, wood floors, tile, etc to allow unobstructed access to base boards
Step 3 - Paint as necessary. Use only up and down brush strokes with the length per stroke not to exceed 254mm.
Step 4 - Reinstall

I had the 3 gear issue as well. It occured mostly at Infineon. I replaced the bushings and and adjusted the shift linkage. It was better, but you just had to watch out for going into 3rd.

Hi Bob ;-)

bob im sure the tranmission comes out very easyily with pulling the engine but thats not quite porschce procedure and being a dealer we have to follow porsche procedure. lowering the trans far enough for the impact stop to clear the body or to remove it is probaly pretty stressfull for all the hoses and wiirng attached to the engine
