Dealer transmission work?
The car in in for its 15,000 mile checkup--a little late. I noted that for some time shifting into first gear from neutral can be an issue. It feels like there is a bit of a notch that limits the throw of the shift lever. Backing off to neutral again and letting out the clutch or shifting into second and then back to first, sometimes more than once, allows the shift into first. This time the dealer is considering replacing the synchros to cure that issue.
Two questions: first, does this sound like a synchro issue and second, does Porsche allow dealers to replace synchros on this transmission?

The Carrera tranny gets replaced since you can't really get parts for it. The GT3 tranny is rebuildable. Not 100% sure what dealerships are doing these days.

I had heard that Porsche swaps GT3 engines so that US dealers do not open them (the remanufacturing occurs in Germany). I'm not sure that is right, but that's what I have heard. I wonder whether it is similar with transmissions. I know Brian Copans rebuilds the G50 transmission in GT3s for cup cars, but curious whether synchro replacement is within the typical dealer's repertoire.

I actually have the needle bearing replacement kit with the metal parts, but have not installed it yet. It occurred to me that could be the issue. It's under warranty, though, so we'll see what the dealer thinks. If they really want to replace synchros it will be interesting.

GT3s do NOT use the same transaxle as the 996s. They use the same box essentially as the 996TT, 993s, 964s (ok, another gear) etc. Very rebuildable G50 (actually the diff assembly is still the same even in the 996). Most likely under warranty they will replace the syncho. Since the whole tranny is apart, try to make a deal with them to replace some of the other synchros with steel..... Especially Chris if you are going to keep the car for a while...

The dealer in Indianapolis rebuilt my transmission earlier this year. They put the syncros in backward, causing grinding while shifting gears. The dealer remained adamant that this was caused by the LWF I had them install earlier. They stood their ground on this until I had them contact Brian Copans. Thankfully they were willing to listen to him. They turned the syncros around and everything has been fine since.

Hey, Bob, long time! I'll keep that in mind if they really have to open the transmission. Good thing it's winter here. I have a bit of work to do with the car. Too bad the loaner is a Cayenne. That may cure me of thinking F250 diesel tow vehicle..... Just wondering if it's time for Brian to address the transmission or let the dealer take a whack. First rule, never sell a GT3. Second rule, see rule #1.

Towing with my wife's 05 Excursion diesel (F250 chassis) and a Cayenne S; there is no comparison.

Off topic, I know, but I was headed the other way. Driving the Cayenne is persuadeing me that I do not want to tow at all--just do not appreciate such large vehicles. I still drive to the track.
Anyone here have a dealer replace synchros?
