Way OT- e36 chassis- engine swap to 4.4 l V8
Hi there and good day to all. Is it worth the time and money to do a swap like that. My friend(who I think is nutso in a good way) says engine wouldn't weigh that much over the 3.2 so won't destroy its driving dynamics . Minus suspension/ brakes/ chassis fortication and whatever else it wouldn't be too expensive to do. Is he smoking crack or I'm sniffing glue? And what would you think it would cost for this endeavor? Regards. Mike

e36, is sort if stupid to install the 4.4l in. I mean you wont get much more power over the install of the Euro 3.2l s54 Engine.
Now if we were talking about the e46 3.2l for the 5.0 M5 V8 engine the s62, then yes, that is awesome, but mucho, mucho deniro.
I say throw in Euro s54. You can mod it to death and get close to 400 hp if done right.

Why do the 4.4l?? That makes no sense tp spend all the extra money on the V8 and the wireharness when you can just get the 3.2l Euro s54 engine. The pick up points are all different and you need to custom fab many parts to support the V8.
As far as weight is concerned the V8 over the 6 is no more then 200lbs. The 6 has a cast iron block, while the V8 uses aluminuim/magnisium parts.
What year e36? OBDI or OBDII?

So who's nuts, you or your "friend"?
Looks like weight isn't the issue. The center of gravity for the motor would be closer to the firewall if done right too.

Only reason for a 4.4 versus the euro 3.2 is more trq I guess-that's his side of the story. I think 4.4l is obd II since host would come from a 740 which came out in 97. I can imagine putting the obd1 from the 540i but that's 4.0 liters. I ran with someone in an old e30 with a V8 at T-hill but it came out of a Ford Mustang. Holger couldn't pass him. Holger got nething to say : ) ?. I have to give credit to guys who can do stuff like that. Sure wished I was mechanically inclined and a nice workshop too : ). Regards. Mike

Holger- don 't let me drive behind you. My new license plate "REDMIST". I think 200 lbs is alot- aren't you 200lbs. I would feel the weight in my car if it was ballast weight. MIke

A few quick points...
I've got video of that "old e30 with a V8" driving straight off the track at full speed at Turn 10. He would have punted anyone in front of him. I'm happy to keep distance between his Frankenstein & my car.
I bet it's <200 lb difference (just a hunch). Could more than be made up for by tweaking for some extra power. I don't know much about BMW motors, but I wonder about the longevity of a Euro S54 when constantly flogged hard.
No rain in the forecast tomorrow. Pass out earplugs to the staff & patients. Thanks for the suggestion!
