The Euro 3.2 and the 4.4L V8 are very similar in weight. I believe there is less than 50lbs difference in the two. The V8 will produce more torgue but the maximum HP with the mods out there will be similar. The V8 also will not rev as high as the 6cyl.

Personally I would go the route of dropping in a Euro 3.2L, give James Clay a call at Bimmerworld and talk to him about cams and a intake plenum for the car. He has some pretty trick stuff that he is working on and has a couple cars with basically stock Euro S50B32 (E36 Euro Motors) that are/will be making over 300rwhp. Ask Frayed about the skinny on them.

Gotta give the nod to the euro powerplant. No engine transplant is cheap, and you can easily drop 10k on the euro motor + install. The little things really add up if you want a clean install and use the 'right' bmw factory parts.

The V8 has been done, and IIRC, weights are very similar. Problem is, its much less plug and play, and the motor cost a heck of a lot more. I wouldn't be surprised if you ran through upwards of 25k+ to have a clean install done (factory fit and finish).

The euro motors will never make the tq of the 4.4L, but with the hot cams, engine tuning, euro air box ($$$), alpha-N software, you can exceed 300 rwhp. I'm pretty certain mine will, and might be upwards of 325 rwhp. Should be a load of fun.

I can't get the E36 cars out of my blood. They are fun to drive and I'll probably always have one around that I'll be tinkering with.

A buddy of mine at Edge Motorwerks in the East Bay did the 4.4L install into his E36 M3. Here's a write up.

Why not an E39 M5 powerplant? Regular M62 4.0/4.4 would take more $ and time to get same power.
Call Jeff Hecox or Eric Bateman at Dinan, they've got a couple Grand Am Daytona Prototype E39 M5 V8 engines that won't be running next year, might be able to pick one up. Tell them Austin says hello you'll get the red carpet treatment.

Red face Here is my take on it.

I think Mooty went so fast that the front of his car hit the speed of light and exploded.
