Question Cold Start?

So, I finally finished reading the user's manual... it took me a long time... I was busy driving...

One thing that had me was that the manual states that you should start driving right away on a cold engine... contrary to all my beliefs and all user manuals I have read before...

that is correct, you should NOT let the car idle to 'warm up'

i generally stay under 3000RPM for a good 10 minutes, or until the temp guage reaches 180*

That's because of emissions, the cats heat up quicker.

I let mine idle till warm, and then drive away. I would (if you could) not drive away cold.

Either a short warm up and/or an easy drive until the engine is up to normal operating temperature will suffice to take care of your engine. There is pressure on the car manufacturers to reduce emissons, not waste fuel, and not to waste oil in general. The latter comes into play in the user's manuals over the frequency of engine oil changes.

I was surprised to read that too. Like Sloth, I let my engine warm up until it smooths out then drive it gently until the oil temp is ready.

Well if car is parked outside on a cold day ie at a hotel next to the track : ) I let it warm up before driving off. Other then that I usually drive off right away since car is in my garage. Regards. Mike
