No one knows if the next GT3 will come to the US. I still don't like the 997 look at all (very unaggressive IMHO) and am very happy I bought my GT3 when I did!

p.s. I don't like the Boxster-style center exhaust at all!! I each his own I guess.

Personally I don't really care for it from those pix. Interesting that it is being built on the 997 C2 rather than the C4 chassis as our current ones are. I think this looks like a small gain over our current cars, 20hp isn't that much, and it doesn't look that different either. I'm gonna wait for the 998 GT3, for it is coming, and it will be a real quantum leap forward.

You're completely right, that's the wet sump engine.

JA JA JA. Porsche is going with a cheaper engine to increase their profit on the next GT3. Bye bye GT1 derived engine. Are they planning to do the same with the Turbo?

Honestly, I'll pass on that one. 20Hp more on a weaker engine is not atractive to me. In fact, I can get 30Hp reliable from my 2004 engine with the Manthey Racing K410 kit.

Porsche will need more than 500Hp on that car to be competitive with the incoming Corvette Z06, Viper Coupe and Ferrari F430. 400Hp in 2 years will be a joke.

20 HP is not much for a car that is certainly going to cost more money and is certainly a lot uglier. It looks like there will be little performance gains, if any. I wouldn't be surprised to see the loss of dry sump in the interest of profit, since that's what porsche is all about now . . .

998 GT3 will be that quantum leap. It is actually very good news for us if they do cheapen the 997GT3, give it a wet sump regular motor etc, it will make our 996 'the one to get'. Thanks PAG!!
(I know I'm in the minority, but I really prefer the 996 styling to the faux retro 997, and I really prefer our interior.)

The 997GT3 for sure looks better than it's 996 brother, and who knows, the interior may have a nice full alcantara/carbon dash/console... I know one thing, the interior will be better quality.

Yeah i'm with macfly on that one. the 996 looks better and doesn't have that horrendously ugly interior with the wierd steering wheel.
what i was wondering, was who will be buying this car (the 997 GT3.)
it lacks dry sump. isn't that the point? or is porsche going to screw all enthusiasts and bend over for the luxury market even with its ''hardcore'' cars. i thought that was what mercedes benz was for . . .
does anyone else know about any major advantaged that will make up for the aesthetics and the wet sump engine? so far all i see is 20 horsepower which can easily be wrought from a 996 GT3 and an almost guaranteed increase in price . . .
is this it or are there some other aspects (positive) of the 997 we are overlooking?

From the Autoweek article it does look kinda bleek from a performance POV, but lets wait and see... Porsche always improve - well usually.

Strange, everyone liked the looks of uncamouflaged 997GT3, but dislikes the camouflaged version - can't imagine why...

You can always relie on our good friends at Porsche.

Just when the whole forum "thing" begins to lose a bit of momentum, due to holidays and the fact that there is nothing really going on (well apart from Journoman trying to get a rise) they put their collective heads together and come up with a new GT3 "Exclusive".

What a master stroke! The new car will have the same engine as the 997S! No whiz bang suspension! Slower to 60mph! Faster at the 'Ring. Bigger Cup holders to accommodate the bladder busting Big Gulp for the Colonies! Greater ground clearance to make it possible to drive into Burger King and "Go Large" safe in the knowledge you will be able to drive out with your brake ducts in place! PCCB Sir? Why of course! Standard fitments on the "New GT3"

"Would Sir like wood trim on his steering wheel for the full authentic Pan Carrera feel? It is all the rage this year to match in with our real imitation 'Ring timing slip that is standard fit in the Glovebox!"

If you have a Mk1 my advice is to hold onto it. It is the purest of the breed and will become a future classic in the mold of the 73 RS (in my humble opinion).

Thank you Herr Doktor.

P.

I agree with Macfly too. Maybe the looks of the 997 need to grow on me, but right now I prefer the 996 GT3.

And as far as the HP numbers go, I don't understand why people get so caught up in the numbers?!? Isn't it more about balance? About the car as a whole? After all there is only so much power that one can use, even on the track.

as far as a wet sump system goes, it's unorthodox of Porsche to dothis on a 911 series motor. This car is most likely still in prototype phase as well as the engine. I don't think a wet sump will seriously degrade the reliability of the engine as I'm sure Porsche engineers are already aware of any reliability issues if they do switch to that. If they do choose wet sump, who knows, maybe they built a better mousetrap and shoe horned it in the back of one of Porsche's most successful model series cars.
