Default Be honest, what was your 996 folly?

So what was the dumbest thing you bought for your 996 or other Porsche car? Or the mod that you decided later was silly?

I'll start with my own Mea Culpa:

Bought these headlight tint films for my 2001 C4 Cab a week after I took ownership of it. I mean I HAD to have them -

I guess I had visions of David Beckam's 911 Turbo seen here-

After they arrived I looked at them and immediately realized "but wait, now my headlights won't work as well". I thought about the deer that my wife hit in my new truck a few years ago while on her way home and the $7k in front end damage it did (luckily she was unhurt). I shook my head and chuckled and put them back in the box. They are still in the garage as a reminder to think through the purchases I am considering. Even though I didn't return them they have actually saved me money in the long run by making me buy more deliberately.

What was your folly? Or what did you buy too soon or out of order with what makes sense?

Another important thing I learned was to separate from online car parts.

Cheers,

D.

No BS, I have managed to leave my 996 AS-IS since my purchase back in 2011. So no "folly" for me

My folly was selling my 2003 996 and buying a 997 S.

Reindeer antlers and a nose for her first Xmas. No, there are no surviving photos.

Really didn't think the switch to 997 was worth it?

Only 4 modifications in it's life:

1) Replaced the ultra crappy "HiFi" sound system. No regrets.
2) Added the air bag disable bar to the passenger seat so my son can ride up front. No regrets.
3) Swapped the IMSB while the transmission was out for other work. No regrets.
4) Replaced the "glossy" turbo look wheels with Carrera IIs. While Wheel Dynamics did a great job on them and I think if it was anyone else's car I'd love it, even a year in they just don't look right after looking at the glossy twists for 15 years.

God lord. For the love of sanity, please don't encourage him

The only mod I have made is to add Porsche crest valve stem caps.

Installing Meg was probably the biggest mistake I've made.

No, scratch that. A decade's worth of various M96 intakes. That was a stupid waste of money...especially to wind up running a stock airbox.

Bought it without any maintenance records from previous owners -- a big risk, bordering on stupid, but that's how we humans handle love. The excitement of gotta-have-it got me, but so far so good, almost 3 months, a few K miles of driving with no new problems.

That's not folly - that's falling in love. Did the same thing with mine. Zero maintenance records, total impulse buy, and very fortunate I didn't buy someone else's problem.

Sprint Booster. Bought without reading reviews, then read reviews and never installed it.

While installing Porsche crest valve stem caps it is highly recommended that you align your wheel caps to point to the valve stem, otherwise everyone will know you know nothing about owning a Porsche.

First thing I ever did, documented the entire DIY here:

I just had to try painting my console dark grey myself. Finished looked good EXCEPT that all the nicks and scratches shined through - ugh! Thank the Lord for E-bay - Bought a charcoal black one for a little over 100 bones :-)
