Default Shifter/transmission woes, help!

Was taking the car for a quick spin this morning and found myself in quite the dilemma. Went to downshift from third to second and lost all shift capability. The shifter is stuck from left to right and moves without any resistance between fore and aft. The car is stuck in first, clutch is fine, and managed to get it home.

Recently did a 997 ssk and when I went to check my work all was fine with the exception of the shift cables. Recalling how they felt when I did the shift change, the black cable moves complete freely and the blue cable is stuck. This leads me to believe there's a failure in the cables. After reading https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...placement.html , my inclination to change the cables and effectively follow the aforementioned steps.

Any thoughts? Am I missing anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Check the cables under the car where they connect to the transmission.... may be knocked off from their brackets.

There is a video on YouTube "When to walk away from a 911". It is a 99 996 they are inspecting. At the 6:55 mark he finds one of the shift cables that was about to separate from the bracket. He explains the situation and pops it out and back in the bracket.

Thank you guys for the help. Got underneath and found the culprit (apologies for the out of focus picture)...

That being said, any recommendations for replacement other than factory parts?

Looking into a new shift cable set, I like the idea of upgrading to the Numeric Racing. However, my transmission does not have the ball linkages, it is a round shank with a notch. I believe this is the difference between 99642404109 (what I believe I have) and 99642404114 (ball joints). Does anyone know if there is a cup cable set that is compatable with the older joints? Thanks.

Can you post a pic of what your transmission linkages look like? I've only ever seen the ball-end gear selector arms.

I think I can use the Numeric cables and substitute the end rods with swivel eyes and a c-clip, but I can't seem to find the correct size. The shank is 8mm and the threads from the cables are 6x1.0.

Try McMaster.com for cable end attachments. You can find pretty much anything imaginable on that site, and it's very well organized and easy to navigate.

Appreciated and I will probably use this site in the future, but they still lack the proper size. It would seem all rod ends with a 8mm eye has a M8x1.25 thread whereas the shifter cables are M6x1.0.

Does anyone know where I might be able to obtain such a piece? Thanks.

I had the metal clip holding the shift cable for R,1,3,5 to the bracket under the car come loose and when the cable popped from the bracket - the shifter went limp - I could still use 2,4,6 to drive off the street to parking area. IF you jack up passenger side of car and remove rear wheel , you can reach the clip and push the cable back into the bracket - temporary fix, because once it got cold the clip came out again and same thing happened. These spring clips have "ears" that clip into bracket - and when you push it in there should be an audible click. Turns out the old clip was broken - and hard to remove - got it on the lift at the Indie and he had to Dremel the old clip off and popped new clip in.

Drove home and shifter got stuck in 1st and I could't move the lever at all. Lucky only a few blocks from the house. The Rod in the picture above had not been put back into the cable housing properly, and the rubber boot was jamming the mechanism - had to be repositioned back into correct spot. The new clip would not click back into the bracket a second time - so had to use another new metal clip. An extra zip tie for the cable to bracket is not a bad idea.

Good news is issue did not occur in dangerous place - but when you have car up lift, it would be a good idea at this age to check the shift cables are securely clipped into the brackets - and replace clip if needed - and zip tie for extra insurance.

If you have the tool, using safety wire is another option to keep the cables in place on the transmission bracket. I find the stainless steel safety wire to be more durable than plastic zip ties.

Years ago I had mine come off at the transmission. I got new clips but also used zip ties, no problems since then.
