Default Interesting comment I received from a 997 owner about the 996.

The other day I was talking to a friend of mine who Is in our track day group. He has a 2005 997 carrera. He was saying that people at the hotel we were staying at asked about my car an MK1 996 more than any of the others. There was an A45 AmG, 991 turbo S, 997 turbo S, his 997 carrera and my 996 MK1.

His comment was that he felt the people looked at my MK1 996 as something "special" and unique while his 997 was overlooked and seamed aspirational in comparison to the others. His perception was that onlookers thought I specifically "chose" to have my car instead of "get the best I can afford" like they thought of his 997.

I think people relate the 18' technology wheels to a classic Porsche and it draws attention because it's a good mix between new and old. Definetly stands out next to other more modern 911s.

The comment surprised me and I just wanted to share.

Now is when the 996 MK1 starts looking like a classic to people. 996 is at the front.

You know - that's what appeals to me about the 996 - the newer cars lost that classic Porsche look...the 996 still has it.

With time, the 997 will be in the same boat. But as of today, it's still a modern car. These 996s at starting to become interesting not unlike the 3.2 Carrera and 964s were back in 2005. Back then, you could pick one of those up all days long for $15-$20k. They were common - many to choose from when buying. The 991s will certainly be a good buy - especially given the IMS is gone, among other things. Just have wait long enough.

I read an extensive 997.1 v. 997.2 thread yesterday and most of the comments stated unless getting a 2009+ with PDK and Direct injection they thought the driving experience of the 996 was still far superior than a 997.1 with its manual transmission and more "raw" characteristics. A few 997 guys said they wish they had kept their 996 as their weekend car.

Yea, I figured someone would say that haha but it caught me off guard because it was my friend who made the remark.

Where my car is currently in Mexico City I can understand why the MK1 996 seams special. You almost never see them. They are extremely rare, even at Porsche events. People really started buying Porsches in Mexico after 2001 and you saw many more MK2 996 911s and newer generations in the country. Back in the US its a different story, many more MK1s.

In the end, I still love my car and the pleasure I get driving it.

https://www.total911.com/in-praise-o...e-996-carrera/

From the comments section - from the man who designed the 996

because the slope-back silhouette is holy for any base 911 look - the bread and butter model of Porsche.

so the 997 crowd read the 996 threads and post negative comments to make themselves feel better about there cars.

Sad.

Yeah, heaven forbid you like the thing you own when there is the possibility of a better option available anywhere in the universe. That's why I explain to my kids that I like them, but love is for their superiors.

I get more thumbs-up and gas stop questions about my 996 that any car I've ever owned...

New enough to be modernish and old enough to be vintage and not as in your face as newer 911s
