Purchased car year ago sounded good then louder as months went on - purchased new set
As a Fister upgrade is to happen- then all of a sudden car sounded like a total POS and here is why

They gutted the muffler - now it's much more mellow tone - I wonder what other fun I will run into

Yeah, all that sand in the muffler can make it sound like crap.

You can easily see that muffler was modified by the non-factory weld at the top.

That weld looks as good or better than any factory weld on any Mercury vehicle I ever owned.

OP, I'm not sure I understand the scenario. Did you purchase new mufflers and find that they were gutted? Or did your already-gutted mufflers somehow grow louder over time?

All of the sudden I'm feeling like a very accomplished grinder and welder - that thing looks like a dragon pissed weld all over it.

*edit* Oh, crap - it just rotted away, leaving a huge hole in the muffler? That's insane. The "Now it's more mellow" means with the new Fisters installed? I would imagine going from effectively no muffler to ANYTHING would sound better.

Do people do this mod to pass a visual inspection for smog? Would a nicely made delete pipe/kit not also pass visual or do the gutted mufflers still keep the tone down?

(Haven't lived in CA long enough to do a smog test)

There is a visual inspection; however, mufflers are not emissions equipment, so there would be no issue with using muffler delete pipes. Cat delete pipes, on the other hand, will net you a fail.

In the case of this badly holed muffler, the car would fail smog if the tech happens to use the sniffer on that muffler's exhaust tip because the sniffer computer will detect that the products of combustion are not present in the expected quantities. If there's an exhaust leak, the sniffer can't know if it's before or after the cat - so the car will fail.

the mufflers came like that - when I had the car aligned the tech pointed out non factory weld also a rattle noise coming out of muffler HA - And the car passed Wisconsin emission test BONUS - fellow rennlister gave me a heads up on set of mufflers for sale in Chicago and bazinga bolted up perfect - adjustment made for techart tips - fortunate I have tools to cut and make adjustments

Were both mufflers that bad? I'm surprised the sniffer detected enough emissions to pass the car - in CA, the systems are clever enough to know when the probe isn't properly installed in a normal exhaust stream...

Enjoy the Fister modifications, it is a very worthwhile upgrade.
