Default Those terrific huge wheels....

that came with my new to me 02 cab, seem to be rubbing on what I think is the coolent pipes running though the front wheel wells. These are the 19" '07 Carrera 4s wheels the car came with.
It's worse on the right side, has rubbed clear though to the metal. Has anyone been able to relocate the pipes slightly inboard? How thick are the pipes, and should I be thinking of doing something about either replacing or reinforcing them?

The wheels are too big for your car. Get some new 18" rims...problem solved.

Spacers, maybe? It does sound as though 18" wheels would be the better solution (as well as replacing those coolant pipes pronto!)

While 18" wheels would be the ideal solution, I really do like the look of the 19's. I think I will try spacers. I think 5mm should do it. Any recommended vendors?

I just installed a pair of 7mm at the front - spacers and bolts are H&R, came from ECS Tuning.

Tell us please....

What are the wheel offsets and widths?

And, what are the sizes of your tires?

I've been told by several wheel companies that 19" will work but you have to be careful.
Here is what they recommend:
Size: 19x8.5 Front & 19x11 Rear
Offset: ET55 Front & ET62 Rear
Front tire - 235/35/19
Rear tire - 295/30/19

What do you think?

Liking the look of bad engineering is not wise. Form follows function. The stock wheels on Gen 1 and 2 996s was 17" and the option was 18". Putting 19's on a car that was designed around 18s is like stuffing your jock strap with sweat socks. You might like the look but its all posing.

JI never ceases to amaze/impress.
* jock straps stuffed with sweat socks: NOT guilty. I am Asian and have a small weiner...proud proof that it is NOT the size

* posing: guilty as charged. I have a full aero sports car (that is also, GASP...a cab and tip) that WILL never see the track and will never be driven to its fullest potential

OP, my car came with 19s and have had zero issues with tires rubbing on coolant pipes. Keep em if you like em.......and do not mind the haters

What are the width and ET sizes of your wheels... and the size of your tires?

Thanks!

I run 19's with no issues, and my jock strap may be stuffed, but it's stuffed with 100% free-range grain-fed California whitesnake. As long as you do the math and ensure that the outside diameter of the wheel+tire combination is within spec and the offsets are correct, there is NO mechanical difference as far as fender/tire clearance.

One other RL member I can recall had issues with tire/fender interaction and it was resolved with an alignment. I recommend the same for OP.

Seen your avatar pic, Ireland?

Just kidding, I know you're all about not posing...

How can this be? St. Ireland, the Patron Saint of Honkies, has decreed that the car was "designed around 18's."

I guess this means all those morons running 17's must also be posers...

Default Theory vs. reality

This is where I separate from the rest of the herd.

My '03 C4 cab came with 18" optional wheels.

Frankly, anyone who could actually extract additional street performance from the larger wheels should probably be arrested for reckless driving.

OTOH, if you do a lot of "track days", then a good friend has a Cayman with a set of track wheels/tires. The track set up is only for clear sunny days - as the tires are slicks.

There is a reason why F1 has three "types" of race tires. Dry, semi-wet and rain. There is a significant difference in lap times on the three different types.

Some of us are guilty of extreme macho bullsh*t. The rest of the world shouldn't be exposed to people like this.
