Default Going to buy 996. Question about durability mk1 mk2

Hello porschers. I'm going to buy my first porsche mk1 or mk2. Is it really big improvments in mk2 3.6 vs mk1 3.4. Thank you for the answer!
Also interested in 996 turbo. What about engine durability?)

Aw crap, Schnell, don't tell him to start reading stuff on here- we'll never hear from him again once he hits KK's crapola.

The differences between the Mk I and Mk II were evolutionary, not revolutionary. Some people will go as far as to say the '99 was the best year. Although I love my 996TT, having owned a Mk I normally aspirated first, I can say that $15,000 will buy a decent Mk I that gives you 90% of the same experience that a $50,000 turbo will.

Engine durability = maintenance

I don't care which 996 you pick or with any car, maintenance is the key for longevity.

Any 996 selling less than $30000 is priced that way for a reason. $15000 cars are going to be someone's ragged out track garbage.

But if you find a good one for $15k I'll pay you $20k sight unseen.

Now let's have a gentlemanly discussion on the merits of posting PMs publicly...

I have cup holders in my MK1.

They are in the dash, right above the stereo?!?

Also, OP, buy the best car you can find that makes you smile the most.

I know they are there somewhere - just haven't found them yet.

Gotta agree with you there - get the best 996 you can afford and it will put a smile on your face every day!

My 2 cents:

It partly depends on the purpose; DD or weekend only. I prefer the slightly easier, more accessible torque of the 3.6 over the mk1 3.4 for my DD. The interior felt a little more mature and usable with having the glove box. And of course, if the front end looks affect how you see the car, pick the iteration that you prefer.

Can't really go wrong with either one though; they are superb, all-rounders that makes you smile every time you get behind the wheel.

Also interested does the dillers diagnostics give proper conclusion of engine, transmition conditions. I got in collection retro 1973 car and i knew what to look for after liking the exterior and interior. http://avatars.mds.yandex.net/get-au...695d6/1200x900

Now i'm interested what to look on when buying 996, not interior and exterior, all about engine and transmission. Endoscopy? WHat about leaking oil - is it visiable when the car is on lift?
I'm living in Russia.
Cars are about 12-15$
Diagnostics in porsche dealer with endoscopy costs 300$. It's not to much for the car i want, but i don't whant to bring 4 cars for diagnostics and pay 1.2k$) is there any visible deffects i can see inspecting a car without special equipment?
My favourite one is http://moscow.auto.ru/cars/used/sale/1018409831-cbc387/ - But there is no dealer in that city, so i'm thinking where to diagnostic it. The guy bought it 3 month ago from Moscow and said that it was very proper in use and maintanance.

If you are not willing to pay $300 to possibly save yourself $10,000, then maybe Porsche 911s are not for you. These cars cost money to own and maintain. You should have $5,000 extra cash ready to go after you purchase the car. Let's say you spend $300 and the inspection comes back "this car has low cylinder compression" well you just avoided a bullet. Best $300 you ever spent. I like the black 2002 Carrera 4s.
