Normally a short block means only the block with the rotating assembly. No heads. Long block is usually with heads but nothing else (no accesories like manifolds, alternator, PS pump, etc.).

I see one of the itmes is 24 head bolts, so this is just the block with the rotating assembly.

100 hrs for assembly? Does the mechanic only has one arm and one finger?

My motor was also complete .. 1 for 1 ... Porsche shipped it to the mechanic and the mechanic shipped my motor back for the core. There are also a few extras in there I forgot to mention because the short block doesn't fit into my '01 C4 because the '01 was a long block

Default Factory crate 3.6 motor still on pallet

Isn't an 01 a 3.4 motor ? Or was that the start of the 3.6 ?

Omfg. That's one of the funniest things I've ever read on the interwebs.

A short block and a long block are the same engine in different stages of completion. A long block isn't "longer" than a short block.

Did your mechanic charge more to fit the "long block" into your engine bay, or to modify the short one to fit in your long car? If so, you got boned.

Wow.

Hehehe. This is what happens when a checkbook mechanic tries to use gearhead lingo.

On one hand it's funny... on the other it is depressing. I like to think that most folks are honest, but this reeks of "Let's buttf**k this guy, he's clueless."

Are you sure? When I replaced my motor, I'm pretty sure I got boned for an extra 6 to 8 inches. Still sore from that reaming.

The long block "crate" engine for the 996 is no longer available from the Porsche factory. They will sell you a short block engine for about $11K, which is the engine without the heads and any ancillaries. The additional labour ($12 to $15K I was quoted) is for work to the heads on the existing engine, and all the labour needed for an engine exchange, plus any ancillary parts that needed to be replaced or upgraded. It all adds up to a lot more than the price I paid for my 997 engine.

Worse than depressing. Anyone who brings a 996 to a dealer for an engine replacement is much worse than clueless. More like bordering on insanity.

The factory no longer makes them but new complete engines are still available priced from $48,000 to $51,000 which makes about as much sense as the rest of this thread. You want the part numbers so you can get one while they last?
