My 3.6 to 4.0 Project

I can definitely relate to your comment on time/life.
Regarding the rings, I would think the ring tension is independent of the ring gap and the tension can't be adjusted. It seems going for a different size is the only way? Fun stuff...

with my affection of muphys law, that won't happen....and you only get the amount of rings you need. no spares.
we'll see....I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the pulls show the numbers I want to see.
will try and document with pictures and video.

Found one interesting article here http://www.enginebuildermag.com/2011...ct-horsepower/
"Of the three rings in a typical ring pack, the oil ring accounts for 60 to 70 percent of the total friction created by the rings. Reducing ring friction by using smaller, thinner low tension rings can allow you to “find” horsepower that was previously lost. Low tension rings reduce friction and allow an engine to produce more usable horsepower."
“Years ago, most standard oil rings generated about 21.5 lbs. of tension. Today’s thinner rings, by comparison, are down about 7 to 8 lbs., or about one third of what they used to be.”

thanks a lot. I'm really going to owe you guys a lot of pints.
I found this video about fish scale pulling:
https://youtu.be/sNjwDV0D_co
since the wrist pin clips are 1 time use, I am assuming I can just put the wrist pin in, not put the clips in and pull the cylinder and rod that way.
Monday night! should begin the pulls and maybe get the bearing case together. ..

reviewing my list of parts and realized I am missing the oil pump housing. when I removed mine, one of the flanges broke. can't believe how soft this metal is.
would the housing from a 3.4 fit the 3.6 motor? all I see on ebay are housing units from a 3.4
something like this: http://m.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-996-Boxster-Engine-Oil-Pump-Bracket-99610701258-/151444972807?nav=SEARCH

Pelican parts catalog says they're interchangeable.

did the pulls last night.
we preformed 3 pulls per cylinder, just to make sure our numbers were consistent. we were in the range of what Jake provided to me so I'm happy. Now we can begin the assembly. I took a video of 1 of the pulls but haven't uploaded it yet.

We usually have to adjust a couple of rings, so test all 6 in their respective cylinders before you call them good.
Now you see why it's takes as long as it does for us to build these engines!

That's what we did Jake. labeled each set of rings with its respective cylinder/piston and did the pulls for each one it was going in. they were all within 2 pounds of eachother.
we have 6 hours in now, and we got the rings gapped and tensions confirmed. hell yeah I have a new appreciation for this.
I promiss to get some vids and pics up soon. text is boring.
