Default Rood rack cover

Anyone have a fix for this? The little cover that flips open to expose the roof rack attachment point always pops open while driving.

Mine does not pop up, but neither is it spring-loaded - it doesn't appear to have anything other than gravity and whatever friction the hinge provides to keep it closed.

If you do not anticipate needing to add the roof transport system, a small dab of silicone adhesive on top of that slotted-head screw - just big enough to touch the bottom of the cover when you close it - would do the trick. I think I've seen maybe 1 or 2 total Porsches using the roof transport system; I don't think a future owner is likely to mind finding the cover secured with some RTV. If this happens on my car, I'll hit it with a dab of silicon and use a book or a bit of blue painter's tape to ensure it cures with the cover properly closed.

You could also try a very viscous lubricant - like white lithium grease - in the hinge, which might be sufficient to keep it closed.

I vote for "silicone it and forget about it."

Yep, my thought was silicon. Thanks

Sweet. I never know if I'm proposing the blasphemy of RTV to a purist who is going to freak out about defiling the car with a sub-standard repair.

Note to self: add "Johns Pcar" to the list of RL members that appear to have common sense.

LOL, I've held back the silicon because of that. I thought it might be blasphemy and there could be simple purist and proper fix. Silicon it is.

Nein!! A spot of silicone is a desecration! I protest profusely! You must have your car shipped backed to Stuttgart for complete roof dis-assembly and replacement.

Channeling your inner KK? Nice.

The fact that my Porsche has no bailing wire - AT ALL - is a testament to how I've managed to suppress several generations of redneck engineering when it comes to caring for the 996.

Be sure to use silicone, not silicon.

The two are quite different.

There is a "proper fix" for this, as I did it to mine. There's a little off white plastic retainer that fits into the slot. I found it on Auto Atlanta and it cost about $12.00 (including shipping)... see here: http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=810-00 Or...you could just put a blob of Silly-Cone in there...

Please remit $5 to me and I will provide you with a roof rack cover tab security retrofit adhesive system guaranteed to last longer than the part you're about to spend $12 on that's already broken once.
