Snow, c2 996 = fun
So I decided to drive the 911 to work today, forecast stated 3 in today in Southeast Michigan. I figured my Michelin Pilot SS's would be ok for a drive. This is the first time ever driving a 911 in snow, 1st year in 3 years not having an AWD car. I must say, it was a blast at times, scary as hell at times, and twice I thought I'd be calling my insurance company because I slid into a truck.
DO NOT DRIVE ON SUMMER TIRES!!!!! Especially with a C2. However it was nice, a delicate dance, clutching, applying pressure on the gas and brakes mine is a 99' I don't have any "SAVE ME" features like PSM or TC. It was just me, the mechanical grip and my thoughts.
I will be getting an AWD 911 in the next few years, putting some winter/snow tires on it, and driving the hell out of it. I get two more weeks I hope to drive the 911, but tomorrow I'll be in the Mini S with snow tires.

The 996 c4 is not meant to be used in inclement weather. You'll need to get a 997.2 for the better awd system. This is discussed thoroughly in the 996tt forum. I drove my boxster with pilots in the snow and spun on the first turn.

Now that is just a silly comment. My C4... and it was lowered was a great snow car WITH snow tires. Never let me down in snow up to 6 or 7". The only better car in the snow is our A4 Quattro with Blizzacks. It is a tank. The message is use the right tool for the right work. Performance tires in the Summer and good Snow tires in the Winter.

I should have written it a little differently. I didn't mean the cars aren't supposed to be driven in the snow but that The awd system in the 996 is not your traditional awd system like in the quattro or subaru. In other words its not going to get you out of low traction icy conditions. There are some videos on youtube depicting this.

My advice is 'Don't push your luck' on those summer tires. Mine is a 99 also and I lost mine in the snow. I would have been OK but the road had guard rails which mine clipped as the rear of the car decided it wanted to go first. All this at 35MPH on an 'on ramp'.. I will never drive in snow again in a 911 winter or summer tires.
