I would LOVE to do that...in someone else's car!

 

Dunno... I always hear about peeps saying they drive in snow. Yet either these guys are really lucky, drive like granny's, or only drive when the roads are dry after it snows, or just never post about a snow related accident as I've only seen 1 accident thread regarding driving in snow so far.

 

That had to be the thread about a guy named Larry from Chicago. Happened a few years ago. Drove his 996 cutting across lanes in a snow storm.....cuts in front of a snow plow, looses control and gets hit by a Autozone semi truck. Car gets totaled and he gets a big pay check and now drives a Turbo. And the lesson of that story is every once in a while a blind hog stumbles upon an acorn. BTW....I'm still looking for my acorn.

well they are sure good in the rain, so stands to reason would be good in snow with the right tires.

 

You got it Pete. That guy made out like a bandit considering he spun it eventually to be not his fault. BTW, I'm also looking for my acorn too...

BTW, driving in rural areas or parking lots and having an accident or an off doesn't really count in my books. That's not really "daily driving in the snow" IMO.

 

You can bet that these braggarts who drive in the snow are driving around empty car parks with nothing to smash into. Wait till they try the roads with the slightest amount of snow on them and no previous tire tracks to follow. Thats when it will happen. But will they admit it like I did. Will they bollux. Anyone can drive in deep snow like 6 and 7 inches. That's easy. Next they will be saying that a 911 drives wonderful on black ice conditions. Speak up you GERMAN drivers. Tell America what the Black Ice conditions are like over there. I know because I lived and drove in Germany for 5 years. They are treacherous on any tire, winter or summer.

 

OK Hurdi, I promise not to drive my 996 in Germany.
But I will daily drive it through the Kansas City winter this year.
Just like I did all last year.
Two days a week, I commute from zip code 66213 to 64057 - about 30 miles one way.
So, yes, I do take it outside of the parking lots.
No, I haven't crashed it yet.
But, I really would like to get a 996TT, so maybe that's the ticket. At least that strategy apparently worked for somebody else. I'll be sure to post details and pics if I "bollux".

 

KC, you need to experience a "real" winter.

 

Sorry that KC's and my real world experience didnt measure up to the standards for "real winter driving". It sounds like driving on a frozen lake for a daily commute, while avoiding the indigenous polar bear population might qualify but annoyingly we dont live in the Arctic Circle.

I drove mine all last winter, there very capable and a awful lot of fun.

 

Yeah I'm not supporting driving a C2 with summers, that is a BAD idea. But from what I could feel driving on hockey pucks lol, the C2 would be great with proper tires. A C4/any awd edition would be that much better with snows.

 

Anyone in Buffalo, NY wanna step up to the plate and try drive their cars and take videos on a regular well travelled road?

 

I ran my last C2 through an upstate NY winter, and loved it. I actually ran Boxster wheels and snows on it, with 205's on the front and 225's in the back. Oversteer was nowhere near as bad as I expected, and it was incredibly entertaining to drive. Any off/on ramp became a drifting event, when the snow was flying.

 

For me it's not the traction that concerns me, it's the other dumb drivers on the road, salt trucks, ice bricks in the middle of the road, clearance issues in heavy snow, etc. My rwd BMW with snow tires is what get's the punishment for those kinds of things.
