I do...and I hope to be with you! At some point these cars that have been on the market for 6-12 months will have to come down in order to move them.

I wouldn't mind keeping the Aero car miles down and grab another MK1 for under $20k....,

Do I have a disease now? Clearly the more intellectual choice would be get rid of both and get a 997.2

But but... A P-car that doesn't break down as much or have catastrophic engine failure? Where's the fun in that???

This is a nice example Link

FWIW, I just picked up my first Porsche, an aero kit MKI for $12,000. It's got a highly optioned red leather interior with carbon bits, but 162k miles. I feel like I did ok.

Wow... Only $12,000 for a aero mk1? That's crazy... even with the miles. Do you know the service history regarding the IMS, AOS, any rebuilds, etc?

Congratulations!!!!

Congratulations!!!!
Thanks. I have a rough idea of the service history via car fax, and the third owner was a RL member. He said he replaced the original water pump at ~148k. I assume the car still has the original IMS, but I don't know for sure. I changed the oil this weekend and she's running nicely, but based on forum feedback I have a bad flywheel that needs replacing. At that time I will check out the IMS and see what the status is. If it's the original, I would hesitate to swap it out since it's made it this far in life. I know that goes against common sense though.

Here is my engine analysis post link

Couple of pics:

Default Too good a deal? $13.9 Cab

Hi guys -

Looking to pull the trigger soon on a nice 996 and keep coming back to this one. Looks to be in stellar condition but the old adage of too good to be true pops into my head.

https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ting=184481609

Positives
  1. Engine replacement (will asks for more information, any specifics you'd ask?)
  2. Reupholstered and clean interior (question, was this a refreshing or was it covering something else up?)
  3. Glass top

Negatives

No hard top (should i ask for a discount?)

Will obviously get a PPI done before pulling the trigger but wanted to get some thoughts from the rennlist brain trust on potential other things to inquire about.

Happy Motoring!

Scott

Good luck!

Though, this could be interesting. https://www.copart.com/lot/38010017

My thoughts....

1. Great idea to get a PPI!
2. Remember, regardless of the engine swap it's still 152K miles car. Other wear items will show their butts!
3. Make yourself a running list of things that will need to be replaced from the information provided on the PPI report. As a general rule of thumb, if the IMS hasn't been replaced, then you'll be looking at $5,000+ roughly to get it up to spec. Remember, this is no longer the dual row IMS car since the engine was replaced at 65,000 miles.
4. You'll also want to budget for other wear items when replacing the IMS - clutch, AOS, etc.
5. Make sure you check the convertible top. Check every aspect of that thing! They are crazy expensive to replace. Ask me how I know.

Overall, this is nice example of a well cared for (one owner) 996 cabriolet. Should give you plenty of years of fun! And, the price is right!

There are always the occasional outliers and exceptions , but they're just not appreciating. Hopefully they're close to the bottom of the depreciation curve, but I wouldn't be surprised to see several more years of gradual depreciation.

Drive them and enjoy them!
While I don't think that ALL of them are appreciating, go find a 99-04 coupe with less than 30k on the clock. There are under ten in the country on car gurus and all of them are asking beyond 30k. I realize this is asking price, but I bought an excellent+ (by Haggerty's definition) earlier this year for a lot less with 19k on the clock. I'm taking your advice though, it's no longer a sub 20,000 mile example. It just doesn't make sense why these cars would depreciate any further. Simple logic would and economics would say different. For those who want a Porsche, the choices of low mileage examples are disappearing through attrition. There is no other choice, new are 100k, 993's are beyond 50, so are most nice 997's. While I don't see the 996 topping either of these, there is room on the upside. In another year or two I believe we will see sub 30,000 mile excellent examples fetching 40k. It's not 993 money, but it's appreciation. Taking a look further down the road the 997 would have to lead appreciation for the number to go any higher.
