If you're in the market it's worth a call. Good/great deals do happen...

I just learned today that the 99-01 996 N/A model has the vario cam with pads which needs replacing after xx miles. This requires taking off and tear down the motor. This could mean a deal breaker.

If that's a deal breaker for you, then I suggest that the 996 (of any variation) is not the car for you.

I can't think of any examples (though I'm sure they are out there) of people proactively tearing down their motors to replace those. If they are in for something else or if there is some sign that they are going bad, sure. Not for the hell of it though.

Hell, most of us go way beyond the suggested water pump interval and bad things don't happen to most of us.

If you listen to and follow all the advised intervals for changing stuff, you'd never drive the car and in a year or two you could have bought a new 991.

Buy it. Drive it. Enjoy it. Fix it when something is actually wrong. That is the way to a happy 996 life.

I've only replaced a few things on my 996, which was bought with a pre-existing warranty and consistent maintenance since new.

- engine mounts (1 hour labor)
- starter motor (8 hours labor)
- starter y-cable (^^done w motor)
- left headlight disassembly & connection refitting (1-2 hours)
- rear brakes (1 hour)
- fix oil cooler line leak (engine drop, 10+ hours @ shop)
- repair crack in transmission mount bracket (machine shop, unknown time)
- repaired vacuum leak in secondary air system (3 hours)
- 6 oil changes (hour each)
- fixed broken driver door spring (2 hours)
- fixed errant bolt in window regulator, driver's side (1.5 hours)
- replaced worn interior parts to refresh interior (10+ hours overall)

If you're not a DIY I'd run fast to the nearest dealership & get a lease. YMMV

Chain tensioners, water pump & low temp thermostat are next on my list of maintenance items, alongside some performance updates I want to knock out within the next year.

I'm a DIY guy but by no mean can drop the engine and replace cams, valves, pistons etc.

I think it's just invasive top end work, not an engine tear down. Probably ~2k of mostly labor to get it done properly by an indy. It's probably outside the scope of my skill.

You should have the tolerance for a few grand per year in maintenance outside of the standard oil/tires servicing imo. But if your camshaft deviation is within spec and oil is free of debris, it's my understanding it's not something you need to prioritize. Just schedule it out and have your rainy day fund.

$25k is a good solid buy there. Probably a $20k off of BaT due to the accident.

BaT is fun to watch, but I don't think it's the place to buy a car. You aren't likely to get a deal there at all it appears.

But it does (as of Late) appear to be the place to sell!

Nice color combo IMO. Relatively high mileage but looks like it's been well cared for. 2 owner car.

This will be an interesting one to watch since the car has been in an accident. Plus it's a targa with some tasteful upgrades (e.g. 19" OEM wheels) and it looks like the damage from the accident was repaired nicely... so it should hit a little above the $20K mark IMHO.

It's kind of funny the seller covered up is license tag (which we all know is standard procedure to protect privacy), but he posts invoices with his personal residential address and phone number. hahaha Oh well.

Ok, so after buying my wife's SUV, I have about $7K for another Porsche. Can anybody find me a decent 996 for that? pffff... hahaha.

I know I know.. we're talking rust roller type for that amount. But even a steer can dream right?
