Motul 5W40, Mahle or Mann filters. Cut them open every time.
Change every 10,000 kilometres or less - never more. (That's 6000 miles or so - makes it easy to tell when I need an oil change.
Engine was changed after 40,000 miles with big bearing motor - so no LNS for me. Then again I have yet to see proof that big IMS bearings fail.
The car has 210,000 kilometres, with 140,000 on the new engine, 70,000 of which are my kilometres - all on Motul.

I don't believe that I have personally posted in a 996 oil thread, so I feel shamed. Let me rectify that now.
I use Total 5w-40, and change it every 3,000 miles. I don't cut my filters, but I have an LNS IMS bearing. Anybody who says to do differently is wrong.

Living in the Pacific Northwest, I've always used Motul 5W40 on my cars (Toyota MR2 / BMW M3) and currently the 996 paired with a Mann or Mahle filter (with the exception of the MR2.) I do the same as Jasper where I cut the filter. Mind you, I've only owned the 996 for several months and it has an IMS upgrade that was done by the previous owner.
The results with Motul 5W40 has been excellent so far.

JG DT40 had higher zinc levels in the oil at 2300 miles/3 track days then either M1 15-50 or Castrol 10-60 ($$ BMW stuff) with a thousand miles/1 track day on each according to my Blackstone OAs. I was surprised since M1 15-50W is advertised as a high zinc level based racing oil. DT40 has the highest flashpoint of those 3 as well.

I've used castrol 0w40 and 5w40, mobil 1 and I'm going to use penzoil ultra 5w40 next. I change every 4 to 5k miles and check the filter each time. I'm using 5w40 now based on the oil and engine gurus recommendation. 0w40 in the winter if I'm in the mountains at -20f.

This question is like asking if we should have tougher gun control law. I went from Mobil 1 to synthetic blend every 5k miles. 100% synthetic is overrated. Heck I might just go to regular just to prove a point.

I use Rotella T6 5w40 in all of my cars and change it every 7500 miles. It has 1200ppm zinc and 1100ppm phosphorous. If it can handle the heat and abuse of a turbo diesel engine, it's fine for my cars.

It's all about the zinc and phosphorous
