Default Best Oil for 996

Fellow Rennlisters -

I've been loving my C4S and have become a Porsche addict. It's my mistress, not sure my wife is all too pleased..

I was recently on Rennsport Forum and the tech their had this message to another new Porsche 996 owner:

Regarding your "new" 996,......

1) Use Total or Motul 5w-40 oil,..do NOT use the Mobil 1 0w-40 crap. Change it every 3K.

2) Use German OEM oil filters and open them up at every oil change to inspect their innards. Never overlook this one!

3) Consider proactively replacing the IMS bearing with the LN Engineering kit. This can save the $20K engine.

These three measures will help your experience be a good one.

Good initial info to newbie for sure. But my main question is about the oil. Agree with #1? wanted to get a tally and idea of best oil you all are using.

thanks!

Pick a high quality full synthetic oil in the proper viscosity (0W40, 5W40 or 5W50). Use a quality Porsche oil filter. Change it every 5,000 miles or at least yearly. Do Blackstone used oil analysis if you like that sort of thing. And don't worry. Motul, Joe Gibbs, Mobil 5W40 TD or 5W50, would all be good places to start.

Oh, dear. An oil thread.

My indie said to use TOTAL Quartz Energy 9000 5W40, so I use it. I cannot defend my position further. Changing 9 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles seems excessive unless you tend to drive for long periods @ 6,000 RPM, in which case you'll want to change your hearing aid batteries every 3K miles as well.

Good luck, and God save this oil thread.

I have had many Porsche and I presently use Mobil 1. I have found that if I go over the recommended 3K miles my car begins to run odd. It seems to labor or just feel heavy. I do use Motul on the tranny, but since Mobil 1 has served my engine well for so many years, I think that I will stick with it

Be nice if there was some way to read through all those other oil threads. Kinda like a search function or something.

What I hate most about oil changes is making sure I have the right supplies. The unicorn tears and dried mastodon ********* aren't that hard to come by, but you just can't get good eye of newt any more.
