Default engine options?

Just bought an '03 with no engine. Would prefer to go back with a 3.6, but have looked into the renegade LSx kit. But out of curiosity, has anyone ever heard of a 993 3.6 swap into a 996? Haven't done much searching on that yet but was just wondering if that is even viable.

we have current threads on a 3.2 Cayman S swap and and electric retrofit, but have not seen an air cooled swap yet. I'm thinking the 964 3.6 might be easier and cheaper to find than a 993? In any case, I like the thought of it. I will say that my 964 C4 3.6 had quite a bit less punch to it than my current 996 3.6 motor. The exact reason I upgraded.

Go big or go home.

3.6L, X51 or maybe good time to go 3.9L

the more I thought about it, the 993 probably would not be possible. But you guys bring another question. What about a 997 3.6 engine into a 996? Or going with a 3.4? This project is on a budget!

I have a good used 3.6 996 spec engine that would be proper for the car, as it came from a 2003 996. I bought it to add to my core bank, because it had a nasty noise inside that I believed would be a cylinder. This was also the diagnosis of the Porsche dealership that the engine came from.

Upon disassembly we found a blown apart vario-cam + lifter that was positively identified as the noise. I decided to just pull the heads off and do a valve job, then keep it as a spare for the next time someone can't wait 10 months for a Raby engine. I also retrofitted the IMSB, added an RMS and installed a new water pump.

I'd sell it at a fair price and you are fairly local. These cars don't respond well to "conversions" and I never promote them because of that.

If you are on a (limited?) budget, the lowest cost swap then is like for like. Seek out an engine from a similar model and model year car and the engine is a drop in.

I have over 700mi on my 3.2 conversion.. no issues.
Whiteout had over 1000mi on his Renegade Hybrids conversion. Perhaps he can chime in.
What about the guy with the electric motor in the 996.

If we take the Porsche blinders off.. there are probably hundreds of thousands of engine conversions out there that are still on the road.

Rattlesnak, Flat6 is a solid place to get your engine from if you want it. I'm just saying that conversions are fine if you pay attention to what you are doing and do quality work. It's important to consider what your philosophy of use for the car is. If you intend on reselling an 03- with an 03 engine would be your best bet.

Of course conversions can be a positive thing. Most of the time they are not carried out properly due to budget constraints or lack of knowledge or both.

Hell, I'd love to fit a small gas turbine to a 996 one day...

OP, a 993 engine is never a cheap purchase.

Good! That makes it all easier! I'll make you a good deal on it. I seldom if ever sell a used engine like this, but it was way too good to just disassemble and use for the core.

Hell, Blake is the one that found the bad lifter when he was disassembling it.

I am busy editing my book tomorrow. PM me your # and I'll give you a call when I take a break.

yes, do a quick search, someone just did that a week or two ago, and described it nicely.

Yep. Found a terminal issue with the engine that I thought was "good" for Rattlesnak. It was both a blessing and a curse!
