2nd gear synchro bad
Considering a 2001 996 4 cabriolet. The owner has indicated that the second gear synchro is bad. There is in very nice condition with 59k miles. The seller is willing to work on the $ based on this mech issue. My question is.. What other issues could this lead to and opinions on approx cost to remedy. Thanks for the help

It's a fairly common issue. My 2nd get synchro hs been acting up for the last 50,000 miles or so. Ultimately I'll have my transmission rebuilt, but I'm trying to postpone that.

It crunches going into 2nd ? Or pops out ? Pop out is cheap fix. Was trans fluid changed ? Do that - might help - on the other hand if po is willing to split cost of trans rebuild factor that into price .... Synchro problems at 50k seems a little early unless it was abused a lot ...

I have not had the opportunity to drive the car yet. The owner mentioned it was bad and needed repaired. Judging by the condition of the car.. I am not thinking this is from over aggressive driving. Car is in great shape. Any ideas on cost of repair ? I d like to know this before we discuss price and before PPI.

Not entirely relevant, but I had a second gear synchro replaced on my 1979 SC shortly after I bought it in 1994 for $1750. by the Porsche dealer where it was purchased.

If it crunches, try changing the fluid and even as a last ditch effort, band aid it with Penzoil Synchromesh. You can't really lose at that point.
If it's still doing it, I would take the opportunity to do a full clutch and IMS/RMS as there will be very minimal labor to put in another tranny at that point. Might as well kill 2 birds with one stone. I've seen good condition tranny's with warranties between $2-$3k if you shop around to give you an idea. IMS replacement is usually on the order around $1700-$2500 on the avg for an indy and they shouldn't charge you more to install the new tranny unless they have to swap over some parts from the old tranny. Even better if you plan on DIY the whole thing.
