Default Switched power options for GPS/dashcam device?

Hey guys,

I'm looking to hook up an old cell phone to use as a GPS/dashcam device which will automatically turn on and off with the car. Only problem is that the cigarette lighter is always powered, even when the car is off. Anyone know of an easy way to get switched power to a cell phone?

In case anyone wants to do the same, here are the apps I'm using:
- DailyRoads Voyager (dashcam, set to auto record on turn-on, run in background)
- Google maps (can increase font size in options under Beta Labs)
- Tasker (auto turn on/off, start/stop programs, $3)
- No Lock (removes swipe to unlock screen to auto power on)

You can also cache frequently traveled areas within google maps, so it will work with an old phone without an internet connection. I'm planning to use it with the wifi hotspot on my current phone.

Thanks!
Chris

There's a plug with four wires behind the radio that can be easily accessed from the side by removing the carpeted cover by the accelerator pedal. This wires for this plug can be tapped for switched or unswitched power. The wires are as follows:

Brown = Ground
Yellow = Mute signal to radio for hands-free telephone
Green = Switched 12v power
Red = Unswitched 12v power

Below is a photo of the plug that I found with a google search.

^That's the ticket.

I accessed the plug by pulling off the carpeted panel on the passenger floor side of the center console. Had to reach around a bit, and found it under the radio, behind the center "cubbies".

A helpful little set of wires left behind by the Porsche engineers, to be sure.

The phone connector is a godsend. Every car should have one wired and waiting for...whatever it is you want to do with it. Mine is running my radar detector, satellite radio receiver, and TPMS receiver.

Anyone know where I can get a connector that will fit this one so I don't have to tap into the wires?

Does anyone see the connector I need on one of these diagrams?

I see a phone in each, but they are not in the parts list on the right.

Thanks,
Chris

I went into radio shack and found pin connectors that fit into the holes of the "phone connector". I ended up with three separate pins stuck into the phone connector, instead of one molded plug, but it works for me.

I measured the inside diameter of the holes in the phone connector with a caliper, then found matching pins in Radio Shack. I wish I knew the part number, but can't find it.

Good idea, I'll do that if I can't find the connector.

Also just ordered one of these to provide the USB power source:
