Mine is pretty scratched and appears to be original with about 79K miles. I was going to replace it (I do this every several years on my BMWs) but they quoted over $800 for it. I typically pay $300-325 for a BMW windshield, even those with rain sensing wipers.
I recently called my insurance company to see about replacing mine as I get a free one once a year. I wanted OEM and they quoted me a $300.00 difference that I had to make up between aftermarket and OEM. $800.00 outright may be close to reality.
I was told that all windshields for the 996 come from the dealer, therefor even the indy's have to buy them from Porsche which is why they are so expensive.
Are you sure your insurance company doesn't offer free windshield replacement? Check your policy. State Farm and Farmers do. If so, grab your baseball bat...then file your claim!

Gonzo is that minus decuctible? I don't recall seeing that in my policy.

I took my chance in a bad part of town in an industrial area, a small auto glass shop with no sign. $135 cash only, no tax, no receipt, installed in my Lexus SUV. Rain sensing and wiper defrost pads. Great job while I waited, a bit scary though.
I just did an on line quote from Safelite and got a cash price of $395 + taxes. It was for a '99 C2 with no rain sensor.
Gonna try Safelite again. The reason my local guy said it was so much was that it's not in stock locally and he only had one source for it out of town. Maybe Safelite stocks it.

It's not free here in NC - it's free after comp. deductible but only if you had damage somehow. Mine is just old and scratched and I want a replacement but does not "need" to be replaced, so technically insurance won't cover it. Sledgehammer time?

Agree. I'd love to see a full webpage with them all so I can choose my own each visit. (BTW, I'm a BSEE from UF and my wife also graduated from there so we're fellow Gators)

Sketchy...and I haven't gotten my CHC permit yet, so no thanks
