Meanwhile the OP still has an issue. The damage is done now and he needs a resolution.

As I mentioned, I always had the oil changed at 5K or less miles, with the exception of the last oil change where I went almost 7K. I kept it topped up always and used Mobil 1 as recommended.
Quix,
PM where you are taking your car. I lived in Minneapolis for years and worked in the automotive repair industry as a parts supplier. I may be able to shed some light on your Indy. Then again may be not, but I would be curious to know especially if that person is in Stillwater.
Thanks

Did your indy sent you the pics for your cams ? I'd be curious to see the damages related to those metal fragments in your oil filter.

Despite another call and an assurance that the pics would be on their way I still don't have them. I'll call again if I don't get them tomorrow. No further info for now...car is in my garage and on the DL until I decide what to do with it.

You will note that Jake said the only reason the damage was discovered was oil testing. Oil testing has not been discussed in this thread yet, but it should be.

Another poster mentioned that construction equipment is way more expensive than a Porsche engine, and most construction equipment owners do oil analysis. This is very true, it is cheap insurance. I send oil samples of every oil change to Blackstone for analysis. So far my numbers have been good.

It's not the end all, but it's inexpensive and provides information otherwise not discoverable by a car owner.

Update: dropped off my 996 at a dealer today. They'll have a look and make an offer for trade-in value. They know of the metal fragments and implications to the extent that anyone can. Sad, but moving on to the next phase. More info to come once deal is inked.

In the meantime, here is some good entertainment. I've totalled up all the $$ I spent on this car, not including purchase/PPI and shipping. Total is $12,003.69 and includes winter wheels and tires, probably not necessary in retrospect. Original purchase was in 3/2010 for $32,500 (C4 Cab, Arctic Silver, all leather, CD changer/Bose and cassette, hard top, 42K miles).

Date Amount Service
5/26/10 $146.14 Oil change and inspection
10/28/10 $1837.73 Winter wheels and tires (SportEdition Cup4/Pirelli SnowSports)
12/2/10 $29.32 Wiper blades
12/10/10 $476.25 Replace body trim parts, headlight reinstall due to blinker issue
4/5/11 $1341.98 2nd gear détente, tires x 4 (Michelin Pilot Sport AS)
4/5/11 $2198.38 IMS Retrofit, Trans flex disc replace with BMW 318ti, oil change
7/26/11 $1225.19 Rotors and brake pads all around
9/27/11 $163.13 Oil change
4/2/12 $30.00 Rear engine lid shock replacement, DIY
5/3/12 $2455.19 60,000 mile service, replace front sway bars, ignition coils
9/5/12 $974.89 Repair cab top mechanism, clean radiators
10/8/12 $126.00 Diagnose Secondary Air Pump Noise (nothing done)
1/7/13 $417.45 Oil change, transmission fluid change (metal fragments)
1/14/13 $582.04 Remove and replace bank 2 cam cover (Peek n shriek)

Trade-in value......pending.

Quix, sorry to hear youve given up on your C4. You detailed the money spent but a HUGE amount of that is labor. You could have done all the work yourself and saved a lot. These cars are costly to maintain if you dont DIY.

In fact thats the only way I even bother owning one. If I had to bring it to the dealer for everything I would stay pretty upset with Porsche and their "Porsche Tax" on everything.

Thats why I say the 996 is not a DD. Buy and use it as a hobby. If you need to repair it, DIY and take your time since it doesnt matter if its down for days, weeks, or longer. Its not your DD!

Could you post what the dealer offers?

This cannot be said enough; these cars are not really for people w/o DIY skills or warranty.

if you are anything you are consistent.
dont really see where he has indicated that the cost was a factor in all this.
