Putting together some videos about buying older Porsche cars like the 996. Can you confirm all my advice is accurate and through enough? Thanks.
Things to look out for:
-PPI
-IMS bearing. Was it replaced? ARE YOU SURE??
-Burned out clutch AND what that could mean about the previous owner
-Some kind of rear seal leak issue(was it addressed)
-Regular maintenance records?
-More than 1 owner or too many owners?
-Body work done? Indications of damage
-Was it tracked?
-Cheap performance mods?
-Service intervals current and are there any upcoming intervals quickly approaching?
What about a test drive? Any sounds to listen for or other suspect mechanical behaviors?

This issues are all well known, IMS, AOS, RMS, Clutch (not an issue but should be done @ 80,000 kms there abouts). All pretty straight forward making the 996 the best value 911 buy a wide margin!!!

Find a shop that's able to check these items below as well.
1. Body paint work with proper paint gauge
2. Over revs with Piwis tester
3. Accident/impact triggers in the airbag control units with Piwis tester
4. Mileage discrepancy in control units with Piwis tester
Paint work and control units checks are very important. I just finish inspecting a RS 4.0 in Oklahoma Coty and I'm glad that all these tools came in play.
Let me know if there are anything that we can help.
Cheers

These cars had a wide range of available options such as Porsche Stability Management, full leather, Litronic/Bi-Xenon headlights, Bose stereo, etc. It is wise for a buyer to familiarize themselves with these and determine if any are desirable.

If AOS is news then please make sure you do A LOT more research before you publish a video on buying a car you know too little about. You would only discredit yourself in the process. There is a lot of information available on Rennlist but you might also want to check out Renntech and other 996 specific forums for information. You should also consider reaching out to known vendors/experts who support the community with parts and services.
Best of luck!

Just get a ppi and be done with it. I like 1 owner cars and plenty of service records. If there's minor paint work, no big deal. As long as there's no salvage title, a good ppi can find these things. Also, wouldn't lose sleep about the IMS. Majority of people who changed it, including myself, have found that there original bearing was In perfect condition. 2k is a lot for a big "what if" in my opinion. Just have your mechanic inspect the oil filter when he's doing the oil changes, otherwise just drive the car and enjoy

While you do mention some important things the things you do not mention are very important too.
There is the issue of theft recovery, salvage title, flood damage which may or may not show up on any title search. There are mods and then there are mods.
I could go on.
If you want to do a good video on buying older Porsches remember first and foremost they are just used cars.
A thorough used car check out preceded by an intelligent test ride/drive followed by a PPI after the used car check out and test ride/drive with all that entails is what you need to put on film.

Sorry guys. I was reading some of these replies and I was ready set some people straight until I realized I forgot to put the PPI. OK, so keep in mind my list is with a PPI in mind. Meaning it's assuming you are doing a PPI as well. I was talking about things for you to inspect BEFORE you spend a dime on anything. Clearly if you spend on a PPI and it fails, you wasted your money(or saved much more!), so you want to avoid doing that until YOU have done YOUR due diligence. That is what this list really is. The things you can check yourself before you go any further.
So my audience is people who know nothing about Porsche except what they saw on Top Gear or heard from a buddy at work. So with that in mind I think my list as is with just the addition of the two items mentioned by you guys is very useful. If I were on the market, I'd be happy with just this info as a good starting point. The value is rather than spending hours researching online, you can get a sense of the issues that you need to consider all in one place. Although right now I'm thinking it would be nice to start thinking about moving beyond pre-purchase and move into ownership experience so buyers know what they are getting into beyond acquisition.
I'm thinking:
-Have $2000-$3000 ready/available each year just in case you need repair work and to cover maintenance. You may get away with much less, but I think having this much is smart.
-Where should you have it serviced? Dealer? Private mechanic? I recommend identifying an independent, honest/reliable Porsche specialist or even better do your own work.
-Cost of typical expendables? Tires and brakes...
-Cost of typical body work in the event of a fender bender. Some cars because of their design can be extremely expensive to repair even basic body damage.
-Theft issues? Is it a high theft vehicle.
Thanks everyone! This is all good stuff!

Your list is woefully under populated.
