Clank noise from Crank pulley & Lights flicker (video) Help!
#136
Generally a rattle is more associated with the chains and related hardware-although a catalytic converter can also rattle . .A rod knock is pretty distinctice .Since the crank does not appear to have excessive play the IMS has to be suspect .That being the case don't know if it is a good idea to run the engine .
I'm sure I already mentioned this in the thread but the noise only occurs after the engine is warm.

The crank can certainly transfer noises from elsewhere.
When I had my crank at the machine shop, he tapped on it with a hammer and it rang like a bell.
If the noise is not related to the way the pulley mounts up to the crankshaft, then I would tend to agree the pulley is just amplifying the noise from wherever it is coming from, perhaps even from the other end of the crank.

This certainly may be good news because a spun bearing would be a PITA.

If you don't have a stethoscope, take a long screwdriver and press it against the IMS bearing area, cup the other end of the screwdriver around your ear. Hear the noise more clearly now?

I hope it's clutch related .To answer your question on why the IMS is suspect- if the IMS shaft were moving fore/aft and banging the oil pump that could create a strange sound (I think). From my motorcycle days I remember chains doing some wild oscilliations if a sprocket was wobbly .

Will oil spill all over the place? I am gearing up for an engine drop. I will be heading over the harbor freight for am engine jack

Fellas, I think I am going to bite the bullet and drop the motor/transmission. This way I will have access to everything including the ims/flywheel. Don't worry another thread will be created so the forum can keep up-to-date on the fun!!
