996 Long Term Test

You guys can laugh and make light of it all you want but visor failure on the 996 is a VERY real issue. I've heard that at least 50% of 996s will be affected. BTW, thanks barn/Steve for this statistic. If you do experience this failure your 996 may not even be worth scrap prices, that's how bad the visor failure is.
Everyone who has experienced this dreaded visor failure needs to immediately contact the NHTS and promptly bring a class action suit against Porsche.
But most importantly, DO NOT drive your 996 until you have replaced both visors with the upgraded aftermarket visors.

I had to replace the drivers side visor mirror cover on my wife's Boxster a couple of years ago. I did both sides while I was at it. So far so good. We cross our fingers every time she drives it.
Please report on what you like better and what not with the new car. I'd be interested in your perspective. Enjoy!

I bet you guys all this visor issue is funny. We let me tell you this fall sitting in my driveway I open the visor cover to look in the mirror and the cover comes off in my hand. I was so upset I almost didn't drive the car. I manage to get the car to the dealer for it's annual state inspection and dealer cost to replace was $300. I was also told the passenger side was about to fail and needed replaced. $600 for visors!
Upon the advice of the service advisor suncoast has them for like $75 with lights or $25 without.
You can make fun of the visor problem if you want, but it is much more serious and more likely to affect 996 owners than IMS problems.

I don't believe this visor issue is real. I think it's the product of scaremongering by those who wish to sell upgraded visors.
I demand to see the statistics on the failure rate of visors, or any documented case of visor failure. I expect statistically valid sampling plans. All the cases presented so far are anecdotal and are improperly documented. (And don't try to convince me otherwise, because I will discount or ignore any data you present)
Oh, and you are all idiots.

I'm still waiting for the final testing and legal to be worked out in hopes of a pre-sale of the replacement unit. Unfortunately I fall in that 50% - the C2 with 70k miles has yet to have the visor fail, but the C4S with 26k miles has experienced this dreaded and soon to be well known failure. So now the 50% failure rate has been substantiated and based on my one experience we now know that lower mileage and lack of use contributes to this problem. I am wondering if I should replace the OEM visor on the C2 before it fails, just for peace of mind?

You certainly don't want to be out on the road enjoying your Porsche, far from home and experience a problematic visor(SVF) failure, perhaps even a DVF(double visor failure)...well we have a solution soon to be available to Rennlisters.

Why isn't this a sticky? I never knew this to be a problem with the car. Thank God for Rennlist.
Is there a DIY solution to this problem? Is a special hinge puller required?
Should I just wait until my Targa top has to be replaced and just change the visors at the same time? What other work should I do 'while I'm in there'? I'm thinking I should re-wrap the leather on the stearing wheel. I imagine that it's easier to access with the entire top removed.

I would be sure to replace the visors when you replace your; water pump,AOS, IMSB, RMS,engine mounts, coolant tank, etc. but be sure to do it before any issues might occur UNLESS you really don't care about your Porsche.
