Default **would appreciate some quick feedback regarding clutch chatter feel**

all,

test drove a 99 996 today and while shifting to get on the freeway i noticed what felt like slight clutch chatter upshifting and then again when i downshifted into 1st gear.

the owner thought it could be the flywheel since the clutch was replaced 6K miles ago.

any feeback is much appreciated.

Generally speaking you don't get much notice of a clutch wearing out other than the release point getting really high. So it sounds like maybe corners were cut in the last replacement. Probably just have to assume the owner knows what he is talking about & count on removing trans & clutch to inspect flywheel. $1,000. labor & $700 for flywheel. This is good news if you intend to replace IMS bearing & get a reduced price on the car.

confusing answer to me....

"Generally speaking you don't get much notice of a clutch wearing out"
True

"assume the owner knows what he is talking about"
awe - the owner said FLYWHEEL

FWIW a flywheel going out can happen even if the clutch job was done RIGHT and no corners were CUT.... I dont know how you drew the conclusion the job was poor since the flywheel may have gave out 6k miles after replacement no knowing anything about how many miles are on the car or how long it took to drive 6k miles or if all 6k miles were on the track or to grandmas house...

I think - it could be the flywheel

another guess is air in the clutch lines

Ed.....I think you are on it. You mentioned air in the line.....with my recent clutch / FW replacement job I had done, it is taking me a while to get used to the new clutch. It just doesn't feel right. Maybe the key is to bleed the clutch. Doing it tomorrow.

So ahhhhh groovester......what happened to the CA car requirement? Sorry couldn't help myself.

Sounds to me like the owner is saying "I KNEW I should have replaced the flywheel, BUT since I am going to sell the car soon..."
