**would appreciate some quick feedback regarding clutch chatter feel**
all,
test drove a 99 996 today and while shifting to get on the freeway i noticed what felt like slight clutch chatter upshifting and then again when i downshifted into 1st gear.
the owner thought it could be the flywheel since the clutch was replaced 6K miles ago.

Generally speaking you don't get much notice of a clutch wearing out other than the release point getting really high. So it sounds like maybe corners were cut in the last replacement. Probably just have to assume the owner knows what he is talking about & count on removing trans & clutch to inspect flywheel. $1,000. labor & $700 for flywheel. This is good news if you intend to replace IMS bearing & get a reduced price on the car.

"Generally speaking you don't get much notice of a clutch wearing out"
True
"assume the owner knows what he is talking about"
awe - the owner said FLYWHEEL
FWIW a flywheel going out can happen even if the clutch job was done RIGHT and no corners were CUT.... I dont know how you drew the conclusion the job was poor since the flywheel may have gave out 6k miles after replacement no knowing anything about how many miles are on the car or how long it took to drive 6k miles or if all 6k miles were on the track or to grandmas house...
anyone hear of them - yea, I know him (and the shop)
its not exactly what I look for in a shop...kinda racey and bright colors, in your face speed demons with loads of mods on everything....sorry to say...I know many people who love his place....I didnt like it...as for his service I think he's trusted and does a lot of stuff...
Ed.....I think you are on it. You mentioned air in the line.....with my recent clutch / FW replacement job I had done, it is taking me a while to get used to the new clutch. It just doesn't feel right. Maybe the key is to bleed the clutch. Doing it tomorrow.
So ahhhhh groovester......what happened to the CA car requirement? Sorry couldn't help myself.

sneaky pete...the car is a california car...brought to seattle about 4 years ago. silver/black...not heavily optioned....96K miles is higher than i was after but the price is where i want it and the owner of the car wants my 2003 E320 mercedes on trade.
what a beautiful day today to test drive the car...the 996 has an awesome feel to it

I think - it could be the flywheel
Sounds to me like the owner is saying "I KNEW I should have replaced the flywheel, BUT since I am going to sell the car soon..."
