or didn't know how to check it
Look am am not saying the owner isn't a slime ball, but don't jump to conclusions without facts....maybe he cheaped out and everything on the car is held in place with bubble gum and tape.... I just think saying things without knowing may be a poor approach

the owner of the car is a dealer in seattle wa. i prefer to keep things more private when i purchase a car however in this case it is not an ordinary deal.
i have never purchased a car from a dealer. i've always prefered dealing with a private individual. i found out about the car from my sister in law who lives near the dealership and saw it on the lot. it spurred my curiosity and after looking at the car/driving it, and their very generous offer on my mercedes 2003 E320 trade in, it is a deal i should probably go for however the miles are higher than i wanted(96K)and there are no service records as the dealer claims they lost the file but did give me the name of the previous owner and contact info for the shop that did the service on the car. the salesperson is also helping locate the previous owner for me.
according to the dealer the clutch was done at 85K, RMS at 90K as well as the brakes and new tires 2K ago.
unless i can get my hands on the service records and do a PPI at my friends shop in seattle i am not going forward with the deal.
since the clutch chatter is ever so slight, do you feel the culprit can be found during the PPI?

or maybe it was 2 years ago, he drives it 3k/year and when they did they clutch the shop didn't find any problems with it....

Now I'm confused! A forum member requests quick feedback due to a potential eminent purchase decision & I do so based on the info given. Here I go assuming again, but obviously the perpetrater of this dubious act is a close friend of yours so IF I apologize to your friend will that make the flywheel all better? Maybe if you reread each & every word in post #3 (they are all important) you won't be so confused.

must be some holiday stress beginning early this year?
Look I read your post - all of them...all words
and to the OP who I have never met I said that he should find out more and not assume the car was poorly maintained or had shoddy work performed because a part failed or showed signs that it may in fact be starting to fail....it also says nothing about the PO being a cheap a$$ and trying to save money because he is planning to sell the car...
YOU read all that into it.....to which I asked how the hell could you draw that type of conclusion!
I see owners sink large sums of money into cars right before they sell them because the want it to be right for the next guy... and I still have faith that most people are good....and mistakes still happen and parts that were good yesterday fail today
we can have this pissing contest for the rest of eternity but the OP has almost already wrote the car off...so it really doesnt matter...he gained some knowledge driving one, and will get more on the next car he drives.... peace man!

ashame many threads get ugly but i'm also guilty of provoking at times so i fully understand. i also have to agree that there is a chance the PO didn't do a full clutch service which would have included doing the flywheel because he was going to sell the car but its just a guess and will not know until i get some info from the shop that did the work.
everyone just remember we all love these cars and i myself am trying to be less critical of my fellow rennlist members even though it is like defying gravity at times.
turns out another member on the forum has test driven the car i have been discussing and he too felt the clutch chatter. i'm a bit less interested in the car however if i do get a hold of the previous owner and shop service info i may pursue it more aggressively.
what got me excited was the money they offered me on my benz i want to trade in and with the 10% tax savings(communist state of washington)it made some good sense and has opened me up to the dealer option. i only paid $9K for my 2003 e320 and the dealer offered me $11K so at $16,900 for the 996 + tax the deal made some sense.
i'll keep you posted and again appreciate all the feedback/info.

I like a good debate......there are always 14 ways to look at something,. What I don't like is when posts turn personal and cross a line. Too much effort and time is wasted being a douche..When that happens I just revert back to ****...
