Bingo

I think you'd need a Veyron, and one of those would cost you a few extra bucks.

I've done the ToD in the 996 and it was planted, nimble and fast. I don't think that the M3 would handle the switchbacks as well as the M3.

I'm not sure I understand you comment on the M3 - the E90 is the most recent version. E90 is the latest generation of the sedan. E92 is the latest version of the coupe.

Crikey, are there no sports car lovers left in this joint? A good 0-60 time means a car is quick, not that it's fast. When it's still accelerating past 100, that's fast.

And the first guy who says, "no replacement for displacement!", I'm gonna close his frunk lid using the hood ornament. Don't test me.

But would it handle it as well as the M3?

My guess, the M3 will handle like an M3.... just a wild guess.

Hmm... fingers and brain not communicating.

I meant to say that I suspected the 996 would handle the switchbacks better than the M3.

- simple physics - less weight and a lower center of gravity make it easier to throw around the switchbacks.

996 with the X51 package and you get 4.7 0-60 (or so the Internet says!). What do the 2012 997 non-S's have for horsepower - 345-350?

It's the standard bench mark for assessing a car's capabilities, but as mentioned, there is so much more that defines a decent sports car, like steering feedback, power delivery, handling, braking etc., and although I've drunk from the Porsche fountain, I am very happy with the overall Porsche package and think as a marque, it is one of the best.

One of the things I've enjoyed most about Top Gear are the number of times a Porsche has been pitted against other marques with higher hp & lower 0-60 times -- but spanked them in elapsed times on a road course.

My two cents, which are generally worth less than a penny combined:

I own both a completely stock '04 C4S, and a lightly modified '07 335i sedan. (Granted, the Bimmer isn't an M3, but with its full compliment of M3 suspension, limited slip differential, recalibrated engine control, pulse width methanol injection, and larger intercooler, it is substantially "faster" than every stock E90x M3 it has ever met.)

However, when I want to go and drive for the joy of driving... I choose the 996 every time. I simply find it more fun, and for the kinds of driving I like to do, more capable too.

Make of it what you will. I think it's all about preference and driving experience, really.
