i'm not sure why i'm craving the 996 body style??
i've had lots of 911's. my '59 356 sunroof coupe which is basically in storage and only excercised occasionally will eventually go to my son. if any of you has owned one you know the appeal they have...a simple piece of art that you can actaully drive.
i'm really chomping at the bit to get into another 911.
after selling my '90 964 last year i test drove a 1999 996 and slowly fell in love with it. i'm not quite sure why because it's far removed from the aircooled series but i really must have one. i like the rear wide stance and when lowered just a bit they take on a nice aggressive look.
can't wait to find a nice silver/black example with either replaced engine or RMS/IMS upgrades w/under 90K miles....oh yeah, amber lights need to be gone too.
my eyes are open and hope to have one by the spring.

Well, you came to the right forum!
While I'm a huge 993 fan I've always found the 996 to be beautiful.
The only thing that ever really bothered me was the similarity of its front end with the Boxster. The MKI fried egg headlights took a little time to adjust to but if the Boxster had a different face from its inception I don't think I would have had as much of an issue. I get that Porsche wants its cars to be immediately recognizable as a Porsche but I still take issue with the fact that every Porsche needs to look like 911 on some sort of drug whether it be a steroid or hallucinogen...but that's a different discussion for a different day.
Personally, I wouldn't worry so much about finding a car with a replaced engine or even an IMS upgrade. The cost of an IMS upgrade isn't so crazy that you couldn't have it done on the "right car" when you find it.
Good luck with your search and keep us posted!

I had a 993 that I loved, but it was someone's basket case, and I had business commitments for the money, so I sold it a few years ago. I set out to find another one a few months ago, and I just couldn't find anything really nice for sensible money, so I decided to take a second look at the 996s. I found a beautiful '04 C4S in Midnight Blue Pearl for 33K, at 65,000 miles. It is now in the back of a truck, on its way to me in Los Angeles.
It's strange how the 996 really grew one me, as I had always snubbed my nose at them, for no particular reason. I will say that if it's appearance you're after, the S cars are the cars that still look like Porsches to me. I don't think I'd be as happy with a narrow 996.

I found an 04 C4S in midnight blue over grey - very nicely optioned -with 23K miles in CA and had it trucked to PA - arrived on 10/25. It is now the stable mate of my 04 C2 that is artic silver over black. I always liked the styling of the 996, bought the C2 in 2007 and it is amazing how many people still think I have a "new" Porsche. Some people are telling me that I should have shopped for a 997 instead of having two 996's - but I just really like the 996 - headlights and all.
To the OP - take your time as there are truly nice examples of the 996 out there - it took me quite some time to stumble across "the" C4S that was for me.
Enjoy the hunt - and then the car.

Every new 911 eventually reveals the charm of the previous design. I don't think the 996 will be any different. The less burdened it is with being current, I find, the more interesting I realize this body is.
