Color choice is purely personal but I might suggest that you investigate vinyl static numbers. I started with magnetic numbers (on a black car) and you still has to use tape. The magnetic placard left a ghost outline that took considerable effort to rub out. The vinyl static numbers are also probably less expensive, too.

what do you mean by ghost outline? it leaves some sort of mark after removal?
i can get them for 35$ each door...
vinyl static numbers? never heard of that? normal stickers that you put and remove?
thanks!

I use a magnetic number and I guess if you leave it on a while it may cause the ghost image but if it's just for a DE weekend then I've never had an issue with it.
As for why to use tape with the magnets, just in case a pocket of air gets between the magnet and the body of the car - it could blow the number off. But the tape (if you use painter's tape) is easily removed and again doesn't mark up the paint.

Im using magnets also... mine look like the porsche motorsport factory numbers... porschestripes in California made them. They stick well. I make sure doors are clean and dont leave them on once ive left the track. I store them on my fridge so they stay flat for the next event. Pic in my avatar...

Those numbers look classy Hardback, nice choice.

I like your choice of numbers, this is my #41 SPEC996. In the past I used magnetic #, painters tape, and a set of very nice #'s from Porschestrips also. The current work is from the local Signarama franchise.

sorry I didn't get back to you right away. As I said I did use the magnetic numbers and as is has been pointed out, the tape over the magnetic piece was to ensure that the magnet didn't blow off. As I suggested, you can go to a graphic place and get vinyl numbers (colors and sixes of your choice) and the static ones can be place INSIDE the car, on the back windows, fornt windeow, wherever you might want. They remove easily and no issues with painter's tape, "ghosting/shadows" and pretty simple, all in all.

The static cling vinyl numbers the guys are talking about are a self-adhering thin plastic. It can be stuck to just about any surface, is paper thin, and will hold up for months or longer. I stick them to my glass, but they can also be stuck to the body. Once removed you just throw them away. The red track outlines and red Porsche sticker and red TotD stickers in the window in my avatar to the left are all "outsies" and have been there for over 3 years.
Magnetic numbers come in a wide variety of QUALITY.
Thin magnetic numbers can be found mixed with all the tire marbles at the edge on any track after a DE weekend.
Thick magnetic numbers will hold, do not require painters tape on the leading edges to keep them from blowing off, but can only be mounted on steel panels. The "ghosting" is actually residual magnetism left in the steel from the magnetic numbers. It attracts small dust particles for a while but eventually goes away, particularly if you wash the car.
* One downside to magnetic numbers is that the underlying coats of paint were made to adhere to each other with opposing magnetic charges when applied at the factory. The magnetic number will break down the ionic bond underneath and your paint will evenutally just fall off.
Dang, I should have saved that last parabgraph for April 1. LOL!
Total BS
Magnets won't hurt your paint.
But they will scramble the electronic code in your door and your keys won't work after a while.
Sorry! That one is BS, too. LOL!
Just covering all the dumb responses I've seen on magnetic numbers on other threads.
Both vinyl and magnetic will work fine and not damage your car.
