Has anyone used an oil extractor on a 2001 3.4 996? If so what are you using? When doing oil changes I want to use an extractor to get the majority of the oil out then pull the drain plug and filter.

 

I tried using a Motive extractor that I used for my BMW on the 996. Did not work that well at all. Just my experience. Also, no way it will hold all the oil.

 

It will definitely no work on a drysump engine and I don't think it will be a good idea in the semi drysump of 996/997 engines.
Also, as carcster mentions, a 911 have plenty of oil in its systems....

use the big hole at the bottom - its really not that difficult AND if you start sticking junk down the fill tube you could end up with a bigger issue (like a piece missing and you habe to tear into it to go find it)

 

I have used this one for a few years. It works on quite a few cars.
Sometimes it is a PITA to use since it takes a while to suck out the oil. It does come with two different diameter tubes to fit the diptube.

When removing the tube after pulling it out, you need to make sure you keep a rag handy to catch the dripping oil. You also need to make sure that you empty the oil from the tube or it will spill everywhere.

I have used it to suck out brake and power steering fluid from other cars, so it does have its other uses.

not sure why people would want to use an oil extractor? Is it for clean up purpose?..... I guess it would be easier on your back (less painful).....

 

I don't rememberwhy i got it, but sometimes it's a pain to use.

 

I have a Mityvac oil extractor. I don't know about the 3.4L, but it definitely does NOT work with the 3.6L. I am only able to extract 2 quarts or so out the dip stick tube and can't get the rest of the oil out.

It works great for oil changes on other cars, just not the 996.

 

I am with reridge, why would anyone want to use an extractor? You will still need to take out the drain plug to get all the oil out and it is much easier and faster to just drain in that way.

They do work pretty good on other cars. Worked great on my BMW. Used it during the winter months. Just does not do much on my 996. Only reason I keep it now is just in case there is an overfill....and I don't want to throw it out.

 

Extractors have their uses, but there is no substitute for gravity if you really want to get it all out. Pull the plug!

 

can you tell us why you want to use one?

I myself dont get it either... The drain plug is so easy to get too...

Ok guys sorry for the slow response! First I want to say thanks for all of the responses and I learned not to waste my money. The reason I was interested in an extractor was to simply remove "most" if not all of the oil from the top then (if need be) pull the plug to get anything remaining (and obviously grab the filter). I will continue with the tried and true process!
